If the dog can be helped, and live well afterwards there is only one choice. Pay up.

You have to check your options on this, i love dogs, but i have 3 cats, one of them has a problem with is heart has well. Todays vet have way advanced and i am sure there is a solution to help your dog.
My cat who has the heart problem is ok now, but has soon has he shows signs that the heart is giving problems he got some special pills to take, signs like coughing, deep coughing.
What are your options, is the dog healty?

Yeh I wouldnt have said anything if that didnt happen, but I actually read it fast too and thought he was talking about a found puppy.
Had to go back when I started reading some of the posts
The human mind has a nack for only picking out the more important words when its in a rush, I do it all the time.
As for chap I'm just curious what comes after the heart valve problem. Like what can that do to the dog? Or at least what did the vet say? Did it sound pretty serious or does it sound like something maybe you can keep at bay throughout the dogs life?
w/e the case my minpin has been through almost EVERYTHING and shes still strong as an ox today.
Shes had lymes disease, (could barely walk for a few months it was rough) but she got through it.
Got attacked by a larger dog and nearly got her face eaten off, everything healed and she looks great now.
Then she went blind in 1 eye and we had to make the difficult decison to take it out. THAT broke my heart, but you know what man?
I've learned about dogs the only time they really ever get sad or down about things is when their OWNER gets sad or down. When I had to look at my dog with 1 eye for the weeks the followed the surgery I just decided NO MATTER what, NOTHING was gonna change the way I treated her or acted around her.
I grabbed that dog and hugged her so tight her other eye almost popped out. Just whatever you do, dogs can sense negative energy and it effects them, stay strong and positive no matter WHAT and you'll see what kind of profound impact that alone can have on your dogs spirit/well being. And its weird because even now with out her eye, shes still the most beautiful thing in the world.
No matter what happens with your dogs heart, you love that thing all the way up untill its last breath (which will hopefully be years and years from now) and you will NEVER feel bad, you will always feel like you did everything you could and thats what really matters. Dogs are really great man, for such a stupid animal that teach us things we could never learn from our fellow humans.. like compassion and unconditional love.
Now she has a severe case of mange but we're trying to get it cleared up. (at her age now its hard to tell whats gonna happen) This dog has definitely NOT had her fair share in life, but she is so affectionate and loving its unbelievable, always been like that since she was a puppy. Which is why we named her "Happy".
g/luck chap!

Bunch of damn dog lovers, lol,i am the same, sorry to hear the news chap as someone suggested get your vet to refer a good specialist to you,i lost a good dog/friend at the first of the year and that shit hurt, the same as you,my pup was with me when i felt i had nobody else in the f n world,i had to give her different meds a couple times a day for the last couple years of her life and spent money in the end to help her but in the end she was suffering to much and it seemed like she gave up so i had to have her put to sleep,i hope all turns out well for you and your pup.

Sorry to hear bro. Did the vet say there was anything that they could do to correct the problem? Had to put my dog down just about a year ago....broke my heart I still miss her, she was like one of my kids.
If you can do whatever it takes to get her well again because there really is nothing like having the unconditional love that a dog shows you...no matter what you do they are always there buy your side.
Good luck bro, keep us posted.

sorry but its best to put it down
they can put them on meds but they seldom fix the problem and your lucky if it lives another year or 2 which by then your really attached.

Thats total bull, I had a cat in the same situation that died of natural cause at 14 years.
It depends on the serverity of the heart murmer. And yes its best to get a second opinion.
My older cat smockey got a heart murmuer, the vet and wanted to send me for a echographie at 450$, when I went to pick my cat up from the vet I spoke to another Vet she never mentioned the murmur until I asked her, she said don't worry its nothing to be worried about.
Animals are not like people, they are true, loving and if they don't like you it will show. We must remember that they are with use for a limited amount of time, meaning that they will never live to be 70 years old, most cats and dogs die around 10-15 years now, so we must enjoy them has much has we can when they are with us.
I have 3 cats now, I have lost around 5 during the last 10 years, to illness, one ran away, and worst 2 baby kittens that I bought at SPCA that died in my arms due to a virus they cought there.
Each time a part of me dies with them, but I make sure that during the time they are with me they are taken care of like kings.Last edited by yannick35; 10-23-2009 at 11:35 AM.

Hey bro just saying good luck with your puppy. A lot of times these early diagnosis get blown out of proportion, I'm sure there will be a solution and your dog will pull through. Best wishes.

Who said anything about a "25%" capacity?
Thats a hard judgement to make considering the fact its still a puppy, and all he said was its a "problem". The word "problem" is far to general a word to start deriving statistics from.
I personally think thats ludicrous. Sorry, I do, Such a defeatest mind set based on something so subjective.

its a tricky one chap, we were in a similar situation, our boxer had skin cancer....we kept her for about 3years after finding out, she was still happy eating and still enjoyed going on runs ect...but then all of a sudden, just layed there everyday, seemed drained...but at the same time still seemed happy, allways managed to greet me as i came home from work, but just wasnt as active as before.....skin changed/furr. family descision was to put her to sleep....sad yes, but i guess some things are just for the best. good luck i hope you can find a way around this

it all depends on what type of quality of life you can give your pup,no one here knows what is going on,you are the 1 on scene,so for someone to say put to sleep now or the animal is living with 25% of capacity is just wrong because we dont know totally what is going on,if you can give your pup a med everyday and quality of life is good for the next couple of years or so thats great but yes you probably will be more attached, who knows maybe no med will be needed and he/she will be fine,my pup had a murmur with no issues the meds i gave her for something else and as i said she had good life up to the last few days.

You are talking about cancer here this is far from a heart murmur. The sad thing is that animals are not immuned to cancer, there are some treatments has well for this.
Still its very sad, father and 14 year old cat passed away from cancer 1 year a part.
When i was a baby i had a heart murmur, you know what most babies do, and has you get older the heart shapes up and you are fine.
Lots of animal have it too and most often then none it goes unoticed.
Has i said depending on the severity of the heart murmur then a decision can be taken, but the heart murmur must be very serious for the vet to put the animal to sleep.

WOW, Thanks for all the support!!!! It really means alot.
I am going to take her for a second opinion and then go from there. But her weight is down and her hair is thinning so it does not look good.
If this problem CANNOT be slowed or fixed I will wait until she ready to go. Ill be able to look at her in her eyes and shell tell me when she does not want to go through anymore. An =d when that time comes Ill have her put to sleep . But there going to let me do it. I WILL NOT let someone else lead her away to her death.
I hope it does not come to this . Ill just have to see what the next vet and then specialist says.
AGAIN a BIG thanks for the support.
CHAP
here is a pic of her when she was a baby. She is the white pup.

I agree with the first part, I think MOST animals just out grow it or it goes unoticed for their entire live and they live perfectly normal lives.
I disagree with the 2nd part in bold. I think a LOT of doctors will play on your heat strings and will tell you that to scare you into paying up for the 99% unneeded surgery.,
I have had lots of dogs, cats and other animals throughout my teens and adult life. I have NEVER paid for surgery. All have lived normal life even though some have had tumors, cancer or heart problems or other issues. They are animals and they dont care about these things. Ever seen an over weight dog go on a diet? LOL
More than likely he will be fine, out grow it or there is a small chance that it can effect his life span. If by chance he dies you will have some good memories and after a while go get another puppy. Someday he will die and you will do it anyways.
Sorry if this seems harsh but is this your first dog? If not see you lived through it before and you will again, and again and again as long as you have dogs since they dont live nearly as long as us. It's just the nature of things.
