My roommate played college football for years, moved on, and eventually played rec rugby in a mens league. He, a very proud and obsessed football enthusiast, couldn't beleive how much tougher you have to be to play rugby. Football minus the pads and constant breaks in play equals rugby

the pads is why the hits in football are ten times harder. not those gay leg wraps. im talking diving full speed with your shoulder pad in their gut and helmet in chin strap.

ever watched sport science on discovery channel? They did a workup with pressure sensors and found that, no suprise, rugby players and football players excert the exact same amount of force in a tackle. HOWEVER, football player where pads so that the impact of the force is distributed across a greater area, thus minimizing the effect on the players.
Football is tough, rugby is tougher

I'd like to see that episode. I'd like to know exactly where all the sensors were placed. The sensors would have had to have been on top of the pads to get a true pressure reading.
I think rugby is a tough sport...... no doubt. I'm not saying football is tougher.... but I think there are harder hits in football than any other sport.

I checked into this..... You sir ARE WRONG.....
Football players exert 3 times MORE force than a rugby player (according to sport science) - it's their pads that help to disperse the force. Now..... keep in mind..... The rugby test was done on two MOVING players. The football test was done on one live player and one stationary dummy. ANYONE whose ever played football knows that hitting a stationary tagert is less painfull than a moving one. One could calculate if both targets in football were moving and hit eachother the force would be much greater than the 4000+ pounds that they tested on the dummy which was also already 3 times greater than the rugby guys.
Go ahead and watch it again my friend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7tGY-VDx3o

LOL I have NO BEEF what-so-ever with rugby..... It's tough as balls. I've played with a friend who's on a rugby team.
My only point was to show that without pads..... one can't hit as hard. So to call american football gay because they wear pads is obsurd..... They hit harder than rugby players BECAUSE they have pads. If the rugby players hit THAT hard wthout pads..... people would be dead.
Rugy = Hold back maximum impact/force in order to not die.
Football = wear pads to exert maximum impact/force.

Also..... there are many aspects in rugby that make it tough..... Same as footbal. There are different positions..... different assignments. Some positions get hit harder than others..... other positions get hit more than others.
The football player on the sportscience show played a position that doesn't tackle someone every signle play. Other positions like the linemen get hit EVERY PLAY...... linebackers are tackling and hitting on almost every play. So to say that football players in general make less tackles is unfair unless we added up the tackles and hits of the entire both teams.....
