Sociological questions.
I'm in a sociology class this semester and some of the questions are interesting and can be fun to debate. Every now and then I'll post up a new question in here and see what everyones views or thoughts on them are.
First up:
Here in the US we drive on the right side of the road. This in turn causes our society to walk on the right side when traveling down a crowded side walk or hallway. It's not a law to do so but is somewhat of a hidden rule. For those of you in other countries whether right hand or left hand drive, does that same hidden rule exist?
Have any of you ever thought about all the other hidden rules we have that seem normal in one group but completely odd in another? For example if you're in a class room and have a question you raise your hand and no one thinks anything of it. If you are in a grocery store and you have a question and you raise your hand then not one person will ask you what that question is. They will all just assume you are a weirdo.

We also still use standard measurements when others' use metric. Tell the teperature on the weather channels in fahrenheit instead of celsius.

Yes but,
social roles/customs are made to be broken. And its also known a lot of people do. Also it should be said that driving on the right side of the road is not a custom,
but a law. If you don't, you go to jail. People walking on the right is a custom definitely. But I can't stres how important it is to break social customs. Not in an
anti-conformist way, but in a way that makes your life easier. Its been found high status people usually do this, which I learned both in relationships class and
evolutionary psychology as well as pyschology mags that talk about stress reduction.
If you think about it, customs stem from the innate indecisiveness or insecurity of humans. "Do I pay for the date? What if she thinks I'm a tool for offering so quick? When do I offer to pay? Should I ask her to pay half for her dinner? Would that be rude?". Then there are guys who refuse to pay for a woman on the first date. Their decisive, likely secure, may come off a bit bold but who cares? If I notice a woman reacts badly to it, I explain or sell the reason why I'm doing it. If women
demand equal rights in this country, they should be expected to act equally, and not like every guy they go on a date with is their sugar daddy.
I think there was a survey that was done once on celebrities (high status people with money who have no reason to be cheap) and most of the men said theyd prefer for the women to pay her half on a first date. Some women even said they'd prefer to.
HOWEVER, its the high maintenance daddys girl who will likely tantrum or make a big deal about it. And a lot of women will go out on an expensive dinner just to
have an expensive dinner, and will never call the guy back. Women USE social customs as an advantage for themselves. This is one of the main reasons I refuse
do it anymore, and whether its rude or not I don't care. I'd prefer an independent women with an open mind anyway.
But thats my take on social customs, they're made to be broke, just like the law lol.Last edited by Bojangles69; 02-04-2011 at 01:16 PM.

I never knew this is this true? So what happens if you start dancing with a girl on the dance floor in ontario?
You have no idea how many one night stands started this way for me. And sometimes its like having public sex, well public dry sex lol.
But seriously not to filthy up the american custom my point really is just how natural and normal of a thing it seems like. Dancing with a beautiful woman sexual or not
is a beautiful thing. Dancing with a man is well.. gay I guess.Last edited by Bojangles69; 02-04-2011 at 01:24 PM.

I agree many should be broken. I don't pay for first dates either. I pay mine and you pay yours. I'll usually cover the tip tho. I've had countless amounts of girls approach me in bars and ask for me to buy them a drink. I always respond by asking them to buy me one. They're usually like "that's not how it works" so I respond with a "says who?" I don't buy girls drinks because like you said they use that social norm to there advantage. I've actually had it work to mine aswell. Girls have gotten guys to buy them drinks and then given them to me.
Another social norm I break sometimes just to see peoples reaction is starting conversations in elevators. It seems to be customary to stand quietly and stare at the numbers. People are really thrown off when you try to talk to them in one. Try it sometime.

I see what your saying lol. For me personally I don't ask girls out to dinner or movies. I usually ask if they wanna come by and watch a DVD lol. I'm not really interested in much else then that so why lead em on. If they wanna go out after that then they'll have to split the ticket. I've been called an asshole for my views but the ones that call me an asshole chase me the most.

haha. your an interesting guy stack it starting funny stuff in elevators.
i have a sociology story to. i was in walmart the other day. a dad was pushing a cart with his wife and kid. they were walking towards me on my left side and the kid was getting in my way. i was walking on the right side of the aisle. the dad told the kid to move over to the right just like driving.
i even come to a small stop with my shopping cart towards the end of an aisle in case someone else is coming so we dont hit each other. i hate it when people dont watch where they are going and think they are the only ones n the store.

I'm sure there will be one eventually.... Maybe.
Even my ex of 7 years and I always split the bill from day one. Unless it was a bday or special occasion. I want a woman who wants to work and be financially engaged. I don't want someone who expects to be waited on hand and foot. If I were ever with a woman who didn't work and she bitched about anything breaking or not being good enough it would have no validity to me. If a woman is helping with bills and other expenses then it puts us on the same level where any problems are no longer mine or hers but are now ours.

Why can we hassle smokers for smoking (because it will kill them) yet we can't hassle fat people for being fat (because it will kill them)?
Oh and I pay for my girl's drinks too. I like to pay for things as it makes me feel better. She has the job to take all that money she saves and buy me expensive things every now and then (watches wallets etc.). IMO women have certain things they should do, and men have their own obligations. I still open doors for women (unless they are fat). This is why I get all the quality girls that turned down dates with you suckers.Last edited by Twist; 02-04-2011 at 11:33 PM.

Not only will it kill them but look at the cost we all have to pay in higher insurance premiums because of all the illnesses associated with obesity. Besides they dont like being referred to as fat anymore, they instead prefer you to use the kinder gentler phrase of horizontally challenged.

if you want to get a reaction out of somebody, try taking a $1 bill out of your wallet, light the corner of it in front of some people, and see what they say.... I did this years ago, and a couple of them got pissed. Like I was burning a bible or something! It was worth the $1 just to see people come unglued. Many spend hundreds of dollars a month on something stupid like cigarettes, but burn a $1 bill? Sacrilege!!

Yes we drive on the left in the UK and tend to walk on the left on paths
There is logic behind it, at least in my town the paths are narrow so one has to walk on the road, it should be the guy who sees cars coming his side!

yeah i live in australia and we drive on the left, and yes the same hidden rule applies here most of the time, we generally walk on the left as well. same goes with shopping trolleys, even walking past people at work it usually happens unless theres a good reason not to.
