Rotties are good dogs, but breeding is always an issue with these dogs (similar to pit bulls and english bulldogs). There are always some issues with Rotties because of breeding (hip problems, eye problems, tumors, skin issues, etc.). As big a fan as I am of these dogs, I wouldn't risk getting one unless it came from a reputable German breeder.

No way I would trust a preso around kids but if you don't have any they're your best bet IMO.
I've had a bull mastiff for 8 years now - she's amazing. Mine's about 125lbs and appears to be lazy and lethargic until something gets her riled, she becomes amazingly fast and agile and athletic. I've watched her do some amazing things for being as big as she is.
Extremely protective of everyone in my family, especially my young kids. We joke that she thinks my kids are hers. They ride her, poke and prod her all over and she loves it. When anyone comes over she ALWAYS stands between the guest and her family. We didn't teach her this, she just does it by nature. She does not tolerate any people or other animals coming on our property without our knowing.
2 negatives: massive amounts of slober, and as protective as she is, she's not the most alert of the guard type dogs, mostly just when she's asleep.

I might get a Presa too...looking for another dog or even 2 more since my dog loves dogs plus he could handle this Presa easily....he already has a couple pit friends and rott friends and even plays with a.....I kid you not.
Unless someone else chimes in here with a better idea.....would love to hear about more....Last edited by SlimmerMe; 04-22-2011 at 09:08 PM.

They look like a pit on steriods ! LOL!!! They are unique in the fact that they have to protective instinct, power and presence of a pit or large mastiff-type breed, but they possess the intelligence of a german shepherd, and the temperment of a beagle. LOL!!!

How much attention do they need and what are the negatives, if any, please?

I have a St. Bernard that hates people. Best watch dog so far. Great around my own kids, very protective

My sister's neighbor had one. They are truly an amazing breed. The neighbors ended up having to get rid of it b/c it was showing aggression to their kid. I think it was probably because they had the dog before the kid was born and the preso never viewed the kid as part of the family. I wasn't saying that they have an unstable temperament like some other breeds do.

As puppies, they are quite destructive. Hell they are quite destructive at any age. Mine is 8yrs old. We have to keep things for him to chew on or he will chew up just about anything. Keep in mind, you can't give them regular chew toys, they will destroy them in a matter of seconds. My dog has an car tire he chews on and there is a brand of dog toys called KONG that are pretty much indestructible.
They require lots of attention as puppies. You have to establish their place in the 'pack'. They require firm discipline. Unlike Pits whoa are usually one owner dogs, Presas can and will take orders from multiple family members. If you get a male, be sure that if you have a husband or boyfriend, that they quickly establish themselves as the alpha male, otherwise, your presa will consider himself the alpha.
Leash train them early or you'll be pulled around like a rag doll. These dogs are used in pulling contest all the time and have the power to pull vehicles by themselves. And finally, THEY ARE EXPENSIVE!!! lol!!! They eat a lot, medical issues (though few and far between if you get them from a reputable breeder), etc.

Well.....thanks...I need to re-think this then. The chewing as an adult? would drive me bonkers....

LOL!! Yeah, its manageable though. Like I said, as long as they have their own toys they are fine. Believe it or not, they know what's theirs and what isn't. For instance my boy won't play with the boxer or maltese's toys, unless given to him.
But they are designed to bite, so they need to have some type of constant working of their jaws. Kinda like having a greyhound who likes to run.

my partner and i are in our mid to late 30's and have no desire for kids, so no prob there. i think tht also depends on socialisation, a complete oxymoron would be the dal i had, he detested kids, his hair would prick on sight of a kid, big friendly cartoon dog my ass, and of course evry kid in the town would flock towards him, and im like 'no, no, run away' lol
it would be a purely outdoors dog so the slobber wouldnt really bother me at allLast edited by dec11; 04-22-2011 at 04:07 PM.

Dec11, you need to include presa canarios on your list. Google them, they're wild dogs found off on the canary islands, off the coast of Spain. They've been domesticated, they look like pitbulls on steroids , bug strong, think boned and big block heads. Awesome Gaurd dogs.

lol that may be, but wouldnt u rather be overkill then having sub-par that might not do the job. Instead have something you know 110% will do the job and with extreme prejudice!
Just like when buying something at the store, you buy the industrial grade, you know it will work and continue to work, where as the lower quality things will eventually break down or not measure up.

If you can get your hands on a good bloodline caine corso. You will not find a better guard/watch dog. My buddy has one , and as soon as he brought it home at 3 months That dog would post up on his front porch and just watch. Never had to train him really. the dog would never runaway. He would just protect him and his family. He grew up to be about 120-130 and lean and athletic
Blue eyeys grey coat ****in beautiful. He had the narlyiest veins on his body

Lmao, unless you're my pit, then even Kong's don't stand a chance. Those, and the frame of my house. Fvcker chewed right through the walls of my basement down and into the wood beams... chipped his tooth on a framing nail and everything... severe separation anxiety SUCKS!
Man, that's not a dog, that's the bear Shol'va just posted about!

I would say that unless a guard dog has been well trained as such it is of little value to actually stop a thief. Most are carrying weapons and untrained dogs will bark and give away there position and can often be maced, poisoned, shot, tricked into a room, etc. So the value is as a detterent but most importantly to comfort the female and provide a sense of security and give advanced warning to the occupants of the house so they can take action themselves. That said when it comes to perception ( both the wife and the crook) size is often the first thing people see 100-165 lbs and 3 ft at the withers, so it may be hard to beat a Kangal.
They were bred as sheep gaurd dog and reportedly can fend off a pack of wolves pretty well.Last edited by Far from massive; 04-22-2011 at 09:24 PM.
