The picture of that Cane Corso on here made me want one that could look like that at all times haha. That actual dog didnt look quite as scary in the other pictures but still a BAMF. A solid black one would be a beast. We breed labs at my house so obviously I couldnt get any of these dogs because they would be fighting all the time im sure unless it was socialized well as a puppy.

That being said our labs can be really protective, when my sisters and I were really young I remember them getting in between us and someone they didnt like or other dogs they werent familiar with. And my sister as a baby was choking in her sleep one night and the lab ran down and bit my dad on the hand and woke him up and then took off back upstairs so he would know what was up.

Its pretty crazy how smart dogs can be sometimes, i know many people regard them as being stupid and granted many can be lol but still its always nice to have one. That being said....I am thinking go with a lab (it will lick the intruder to death), the cane corso, that lion looking dog haha OORRR

This poster used to hang above my bed haha

I own two pitbulls, and must say they are the most devoted, loving, loyal dogs IMO. I wouldn't trade my two dogs for the world, even told my wife, if it'd be between her and the dogs, she would be gone!!

Small dog, very effective pistol. In the States get a concealed carry permit. In Arizona a permit to carry concealed
is no longer required. But many have made good suggestions i.e. breeds if you want to protect property.

    Interesting one:

    Giant Schnauzer
Large and powerful, the Giant Schnauzer was used for many years as a police dog in Germany. Once placed with a family, the Giant Schnauzer bonds for life. He is a guard dog by nature and considers it his job to protect his home and his family. In fact, he will do so without receiving any formal protection or guard training.
The Giant Schnauzer is a highly territorial dog, whose life is entirely oriented around pleasing his owners. He is bright, loyal, and sensitive, yet can be a real handful if not exercised regularly and trained properly. Obedience training is of the utmost importance with the Giant Schnauzer, but care must be taken - too much harshness will cause emotional harm to this loving, devoted dog.
He has a dominant personality and will usually not tolerate another male dog in the house. The Giant Schnauzer loves to please and is happiest when he is given a job to do. When properly trained and exercised, the Giant Schnauzer can be one of the most rewarding dogs to own.

Not on the list and not a traditional guard dog but my german shorthair pointer and chesapeake bay retriever are excellent guard dogs. Both are very intelligent and loyal. They are also great around kids both of them wonder between me and the wifes bedroom and my sons throughout the night.

The chesapeake is right around 100 and still very agile and the gshp is right around 90. It would be worth looking into in my opinion.

Most people know I'm not a dog person per say. I think dogs are fine as long as they are no mine and I dont have to worry about stepping in dog crap left behind by some inconsiderate owner. I wont own a dog because I dont have the property to let it run like it should. personally I would not own a dog unless I had at least 2 acres of land.

That being said, that is a good looking dog.

They need a strong leader who can show them where their place is in the pack and be willing to SOCIALIZE SOCIALIZE SOCIALIZE from a young age and also be willing to obedience train the dog. The likelihood of your presa hurting anyone is slim to none as they look VERY intimidating and some people will tend to keep their distance.

dec11, what about a lab? they can get very protective. i have some friends that have one and when she senses that the owners do not like somebody, she gets aggressive. also, your dals, are they just too nice? my parents friends had a dal that would attack on command. she was a bad bitch! i think that with the list that you have, any of the dogs will make good choices. but beware, the new dog may take on the behavior of your other dogs.

no offence but i cant stand labs, the most boring dog on the planet for me lol.
a previous dal i had was a vicious SOB but the 2 bitches i have now are just sweet little creatures, great for warning (only bark if somethings up) but not defending/attacking.

Could not agree more. I have owned them my whole like currently have a red nose and a blue. The blue is 95 lbs and doesn't leave my side. He is the kindest thing you ever met and I have a very young neices and nephews. Also have a 18 month old that he has lived with all his life and that is what he is the most protective over esp with other dogs. He will not let another dog (except the red nose of course) near the baby, not even the next door one that he grew up with and still plays with. Only time he has ever shown aggression to a human was when the electric meter reader came to the house with a hoodie on and carrying the meter reader in his hand and when my son's friend was wrestling (joking) with my son in front of the baby and even then he just growled and stood between the two as if asking to try that again.

Either way, what ever you pick please make sure you get it from a very reputable breeder and train and spend all the quality time with it. All dogs can be loyal if raised correct. ....well maybe not the inbreed ones.

im very animal welfare concious mate, ive rescued 3 dalmatians so far because of this very reason, in ireland they were in becoming very inbred so i rescued rather than buying dog factory puppies, one of my bitches had been rescued from a pup farm

Terrible with families and kids. Herding dogs are never good family dogs. While very intelligent and loyal, they tend to nip a lot. They like to establish themselves in the pack very early and put themselves in the Beta role. Pretty much one person dogs (will usually only listen to one person).

Interesting....this is true from what I have noticed. My friends who have herders are always competing as to WHO the dog listens to and WE all know the dog only listens to just one of the owners.....

the lady whom i got my pixiebob cats from had one of these ( same as Australian cattle dog, afaik?), she said they will bond with one person and that is it. she also said it killed a 12st rotty that managed to get into her back yard.
she said no one should ever own one of these unless they had animals to herd and lived quite remotely as they are about the most vicious dog around, she also breeds american quarter horses as well as the cats and used the dog for herding the horses

Want to hear something funny? Today my dog was playing with a bunch of dogs including HUGE dogs. And I asked everyone this question as to what type of guard dog they would get. In unison they looked at my dog and said....YOURS! And they meant it. What they don't know is that he is tough and dominant with other dogs but with people? He needs to get his licker license.

i think i may be wrapping this up with the presa for sure.

weird thing is im not really into 'tough' dogs but need it to keep the missus feeling safe when im not around, i like elegant striking dogs (hence the dalmatians) so it will be a change of sorts for me.

My gshp, tore up my friends rotty(I am not proud of this). I told him to leave his rotty at home and he brought it anyway. So I kenneled both my dogs. The rotty wondered into my sons room and the gshp jumped up and down and broke his kennel open and tore him up. Once again I am not proud of this at all and it does not demonstrate my maturity but I pulled him off and we got the rotty all stitched up and he is fine now besides a few scars.

I know you like elegant dogs and the gshp is a beautiful dog and nothing is as beautiful as watching a 8 week old pup lock up on point at anything. He pointed at butterflies, song birds well just about anything lol.
