try:
anti-histamine: loratadine or cetrizine
mucolytic: bromhexine or ambroxol
stronger antibiotics: clavulanic acid+amoxicillin or clarithromycin
seen a doc yet?

if coughing up phlegm and it is other than clear or white, then you have an infection. if penicillin is not knocking it out (strange, it's pretty strong stuff) then you need another antibiotic. this isn't something to play around with, and you are inviting big problems if self medicating. infectious strains immune to the penicillin could persist.

I did get the meds from my doctor. I didn't realize sinus infections were a big deal till now. I did wait to long to see the doctor, so that did not help, as I didnt think they were that big a deal...until now because it went from bad to god awful. Its green phlegm too, really gross stuff. Im still on the meds for another 5 days, hopeful it will get better.

you may need amoxicillin for like a heavy 10 day course, and if you can go to walgreens and get a saline rinse. they have powered ones.

if you're having acute sinusitis or allergic rhinitis, the above should work. but if you have lots of cough and phlegm, like its coming from the lungs, may have to worry about acute bronchitis, not sinusitis.
see your doc again if things are not getting better.

Razr, there isn't much you can do. Just make sure you eat as much food as you can, drink as much fluids as possible and get plenty of bed rest. A nice hot shower might make you feel a little better too.

you buy the netti pot at walmart or walgreeen or...
works like a charm. use water that is blood warm. mild saline solution (initial pack comes with, but you can easily make your own). provides temporary relief, and cleans you out like a whistle, WITHOUT the use of drugs!!!

LB
they sell for $8 and last years. you can buy em online or at a drug store or walmart or......
some people get creative with the solutions they rinse with. I use a 1/4 teaspoon table salt and two pinches of baking soda.
some use a couple drips of vinegar. this helps bust up phlegm.
others use a variety of aromatics.
the recipes can be looked up online
for example, glycerin helps sooth enflamed sinus passages
a couple of drops of grapefruit seed extract is supposed to help fight infections
many people include this as part of their personal hygeine routine, just like brushing their teeth.
additionally, and I almost forgot this part, it has been very well documented that adding 1/2 teaspoon stevia (a type of sugar) will fight sinus infection. how it works is that the bacteria recognize stevia as a sugar, and ingest it. However, the bacteria are unable to digest it, and therefore die of starvation. I've done this before and it does seem to work.Last edited by Times Roman; 06-11-2012 at 10:55 PM. Reason: forgot about stevia

Sometime the netti pot won't work if your sinuses are clogged. I use 1 spray of Afrin in each nostril before the netti pot just to reduce the sinus swelling and full benefit of the netti. I also do mine while in a steaming hot shower.

As mentioned before, use purified water....you don't want all that bacteria laden water in your sinuses.

along with the all the other things people noted, an ear, nose, and throat specialist put me on 10 grams of vit C along with the antibiotics. also, stop drinking any caffiene and diary products (make the body produce more phlem) and pound down the water

there is a technique that sometimes works when the sinuses are too clogged due to congestion.
pinch the nose gently and try to blow air through it. when you release the pinch, you will notice that ffor a brief period, the nasal passage is clear and then cloogs up again. it is during this period that the rinse can be used. after a few reps of this, take a break and come bback in a whiile and repeat. quite often, your sinus passage will respond and begin to open without the technique. at this time, you can give the sinus passage the benefit of a full rinse.
try it. it works
