Got offered a job at the gym to personal train tonight
I been going to this gym for a solid year now 5x a week, everyone ignored me as I was the usual 145 pound kid who everyone thought didn't take serious, put on 45 pounds naturally and got close with the personal trainers, other members the owner and GM. A few personal trainers got fired/quit due to them taking the money from training people under the table and I asked for a spot from the GM. I joked around and told him "so you're looking for personal trainers now huh?" and he's like yeah dude you want a job? Going in tomorrow to talk to him more about it, think I might take it bros. Feelsgoodman and this is at an Anytime Fitness, really nice gym (2 years old) and pretty busy.
I asked for a job about 6-7 months ago and he told me I need to get a 2-3 year certification and get bigger etc etc
Anyone else a personal trainer here? Is it worth it? I'm currently a server at a mexican restaurant 20 years old and not happy where I'm at. I love working out and helping people but I hope making it a job doesn't effect my feelings on working out.

Personally I would work in the gym rather then a Mexican restaurant, although I do love spicy food... It all comes down to the almighty dollar tho. The gym could also help your training since you would be there so much.

I make about 50-70 bucks a day 6 days a week at the mexican restaurant, do you think I'd make more personal training? Say 25 hours a week?
Edit: Will be getting one of those 2-3 days certifications and GM told me that was fine, don't have the time or mindset to get a 2-3 year degree for PT when I could be a Police Officer which I will do when I get olderLast edited by pleasehalp; 12-10-2012 at 09:00 PM.

Is it worth it? Only you can be the judge of that. There are many that will tell you they hate and many will say they love it. Ive never had a job as a personal trainer, but I have helped friends and family members head down the right path when it comes to fitness and nutrition. IMO, if you're not happy where you are at, tr something new. Good lucy. Hope it works out for you.

Very true, just looking for people who have been in my shoes before getting offered a PT job and how it went, what to look out for, etc etc. Always looking for something new just don't want to down-grade in pay rate, no idea what an AVG PT makes working 20-30 hours a week. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Take it! This job will give you much better opportunities then the job at the restaurant will. And yes the money is going to be better

My friend loves it, his training /dieting and knowledge gets better every week. And he loves the flexibility of working his own hours with clients. He doesn't earn heaps but certainly enough to live well but, he only just started 9 months ago so still building a client basem

Alright good to hear! instead of handing out drinks and food i'll be doing research and teaching people how to workout/diet and learning just as much as I teach/train. I actually have a lot of friends who asked me to train them but never take me serious, maybe after working at a gym and being certified it'll catch their attention that much more.

I think it depends on what you want for your future. Most personal trainer gigs are dead end jobs. I would think you are lucky to top out at 50k a year. That would never work for me. Of course there are those trainers who make over a 100k but its usually in gyms that are in la or nyc

Who knows it could bring in an unexpected opportunity. After all there are cougars at the gym as well as male cougars. So you could end up with business on the side if your willing to go that route. 100 to 180 and hour for an after training home massage complete with a happy ending..

I was training people for athletic performance for a while and I found that while training them I lost the desire to train myself. I'll never train people again due to this!

You're young, and it's an opportunity. At 20 years old even if you hate it you gain life experience, a new form of work experience and skills, and will learn more about yourself, what you like or don't, and might help you find the path you want to be on.
Really, what's the worst that could happen?

If you dont like where you are then try it out. Maybe just cut some hrs back at Mexican joint. Like Sholva said you may even end up with other job offers. Maybe not happy endings but something more long term. The money will prob be less to start untill you get some clients. That said happy endings would prob get you clients faster. LOL

It's kind of like any hobby that you turn into a business, you invest so much effort into doing it for other people that the last thing you want to do when you get off is that samething. After a day of training people I couldn't wait to get out of there and get home to relax. I did have an old buddy that would train people at one place and would workout at another place to keep it interesting, that seemed to work for him.

Oh lawd... This is the reason I wait for EVERY body to walk away from the tanning room at my gym and secretly slip my way into it and shut the door ASAP and lock it... And then keep one of my headphones slightly lose so I can hear if someone is trying to break in.
Anways bros and females I had an interview/chat with him and he showed me If I worked an average working day of 8 hours and 4 hours to myself I could easily make 400-500 bucks a day! This is of coarse with a bunch of clients and everything runs smooth. Also an average of 36 dollars a session for 1/2 an hour.
He told me he would hire me and that he highly recommends I get the 2-4 month Certification that costs 500 dollars and the insurance (when I pass the test) for 120 dollars a year incase of liability issues up to 1-2 million dollar coverage.
Think I'm going to ask for the study book/classes for Cmas and get started and start training by the summer time. Good news is I have a gym membership at Gold's gym and Anytime Fitness so I can alternate where I lift.

not trying to burst your bubble but you do realise that mabey 1/20 trainers at best earn the money your talking about there and they all have sport science degrees coming out of their ears and alot have a pro x or y career in their younger days too
i just think you need to do a little more research on the industry before you decide to dive in head first, you know what i mean?

Thats on a 35 dollar session compared to some trainers (like the owner at my gym) who has gotten his sessions over a hundred dollars a session and yes I am really good friends with a pro powerlifter/best friends with Branch Warren, who has kinesiology degree plus a lot of others I can't even pronounce/think of and he makes over triple digits from this. Also have another friend who is a GM at another gym and personal trainer who said making 200-300 dollars a day is very realistic after getting the hang of it and experience. You got to start somewhere, I didn't mention on my first day I would be having 16 clients at 100 dollars a session etc etc.

The personal trainers at my LA Fitness are straight turd bags. These fools are straight out of shape like no other.
They do make half decent cash though. It's more like being a car salesman than anything else from what I see. Sleazy out of shape dildos. . . . .

hahaha, that's funny and I can relate to what you're saying as when I go to any OTHER gym (other any time fitness's other than my home gym) I see 150 pound 6 foot tall trainers teaching their clients a bunch of BS and talking broscience to milk the clock.
One time I was at a different gym and had one personal trainer watching me workout and she would mimic my exercises to her client, she was a fat personal trainer about 20-25, I almost walked over and told her i'll take over from here. About 20 minutes later I had the GM come up to me and he told me to stop using the 90 pound dumbbells for bench if I can only do 6 of them, he was about 150-165 pounds 6 foot looked like hes never lifted in his life and hes running the place, I thought he was joking and I did another set and I very lightly dropped them (2-3 inch drop) and he came charging over inspecting the dumbbells and telling me if I ever "slam" his dumbbells again I had to get out, I did another set and gave them a nice toss and left the gym, haven't been back since.
Luckily the gym and personal trainers I know are all 200+ pounds and been in the fitness industry for years, even the GM 6 3" 230-245, one guy who used to train me for free (still does occasionally as friends) happens to be a pro powerlifter and great friends with Branch Warren and a lot of other guys. I just hope I don't lose my motivation working with these guys and seeing them all the time.

Yeah the PT's at my gold's gym are a mixed crowd. But they are all exceptionally friendly and respectful of all clients. And therefore always have enough work and clients. One doesn't have to have sex with their clients, just be nice , friendly and respectful. And it will go a long way in your business plus help with the tips as well.

I would have sex with my clients. Why not? The customer is always right. (As long as they look good

The anytime fitness's in my area are smaller than 2000 sg ft. And are limited on their free weights. Trainers are few and limited in their knowledge. I think your dreams I making it rich at one of these small franchises will be limited at best. Tell Branch Cape said hey.
