Do you give beggars money?
I'm not talking about donating food or your time to homeless shelters. I'm talking about the guys and gals at the intersection holding a sign...
So, do you?

I dont give to charity either. Paying taxes is enough charity for me.

I have but I don't make a habit of it. Depends entirely on my mood and the feel I get for said beggar.

My brother does this and he uses drugs so no. But I use to drive all over USA and there is a truck stop in Joplin. MO where this one guy is there everyday asking for money. Talk to a waitress there and she said he been doing that for 20 years and on average makes close to 60,000 a year doing it. Go figure. There is a TA truck stop in Las Vegas where every time I go there it is the same girl and her mom. I admit they got me the first time but when she ask me second time I remembered her and told her to get job.

there are too many "beggers" out there that shouldn't be begging. We have a guy that has a nice new bike, fishing pole, and always wears clean clothes. Seems like he does have a place, else how the nice clean clothes every day, plus always fresh shaven......
....7 or 8 years ago, there was an article in the local paper here. A younger man at the corner of the exit point of the Walmart parking lot was holding a sign, "need help, homeless, god bless" and all that shit. A reporter, or someone with a camera took pictures of the guy at the corner taking cash, then another picture of him in walmart buying a boom box. Naturally, people became irate, and so we don't see THAT scam artist around here anymore....
....we have a tweeker family that constantly is at the corners with the "god bless" signs. word has it both husband and wife are receiving social security of some sort, and live at a trailer park. I suspect the money goes to sustain their habit. They look really old, but on closer inspection, the lady looks to be mid 40's.
There are too many out there begging that are abusing the charity provided them.
I stopped giving to beggers years ago....

there was a report on this in our local paper last year... cuz all the sudden guys were doing this all over the place - at one point there was like troop of people from the south rotating intersections and they would walk rite up to the car and loudly begging for money with buckets. NOT normal for new england.
they discovered several people that were regulars doing this at intersections actually had nice homes, ect and were making a fortune. i dont remember if they were pulling in all the money from the begging or if the begging was a side job. nut it was a very hott topic for awhile here.
if im at an intersection and they have a vet sign and i happen to be rite next to them while waiting for a light I hand them this packet that I keep in my client resources case. Its a 15 page book of local/ state/ country wide assistance for vets or military families that I compiled. But generally thats rear. I know what help our city has for homeless or under employed and Im at these agencies alot with clients.
i dont have pitty or give from my own pocket- help is already available and easy to get ESPECIALLY if your not working and have all day to spend at the library and search online for free for programs

I think it is really unfortunate how a few people who lie and take advantage of others' generosity ruin it for those who genuinely need it. I have never had a lot of money, so I haven't been able to give homeless people too much of it. There are legitimately insane people and people who really need help on the streets. Also you will be surprised at how many REALLY intelligent people are homeless. I think those stories of people who have nice homes and make $60,000 per year are anecdotal. I recall reading an article posted on the door of one of my professors. The article talked about a homeless man who would ramble on. People thought he was just insane until a physics Ph.D. student overheard his rambling. The student realized that the "crazy talk" the man was shouting was actually legitimate high-level physics. After talking to the man, the student found out that this "crazy" homeless man had a Ph.D. in theoretical physics. I think it is sad when people hear about terrible stories; and they automatically assume those stories account for the majority, whether it is about food stamps, welfare, or homeless people. Here is a cool video that I found too:

I did once, but it's not the norm. However when I lived in Vegas I did call Social Services on lady who was standing on the street corner with two children 3-5 years old and what appeared to be a newborn. It was 112 degrees that day.

I never give them a cent. I always read signs about a homeless mom , father or family but yet never see any kids???? If your truly homeless where are your kids while your standing here???.
I have witnessed them switch signs that say totally different things. And or go get into a car and drive off it makes no sense.
I'll donate the a charity them helps the homeless but never directly to them they rarely use the cash for anything good.

Nope. No excuse for that. I've lived out of my truck before. I still managed to do what I had to to remain presentable enough to get another job. Nobody knew I was living in a vehicle.
The last time I gave some food to a beggar he took a bottle of vodka or of his pocket as I was pulling away. Fvck them. Just an excuse to do nothing and still survive. Wrong. Do nothing, get nothing.
If you have enough money to buy booze and then tell me you're hungry, well then you're just stupid and weak. Plus I'm insulted that they think I'm stupid. We have govt programs for homeless people and job placement assistance programs that I already give 30% of my wages to pay for. Let them use that.Last edited by Java Man; 06-30-2013 at 02:16 PM.

I think you guys are honestly confusing bums and beggars with true homeless and ppl in need. There are a lot of ppl in need of a "hand up" due to mental and physical disabilities. Many of them heroes and vets. Try not to be so quick to judge!

I always give to 501C3 charities, they pre qualify people in need and make sure they are not bogus or drug addicts. Also the tax deduction doesn't hurt.

I do every time. Its your intentions, not what they do with. Your intentions were good, so its your good deed.

You cant always. Try giving them something they really need instead of cash. In my job I encounter ALOT of homeless and indigent ppl. I have grabbed winter coats from my closet and food from my freezer for them. I have bought diapers for their kids. There are still ways of helping ppl that don't include handing them beer $

Yeah but that;s what I did in the case I mentioned. I never give them money. I bought a couple of 1/4lb big bites for this guy who asked me if I would buy him something to eat. I see what you're saying I just have little faith in humanity these days. I used to be a nice guy when I was younger No, really!!!

My wife used to complain to me but now she gets it....no matter what, you walk away feeling good. It builds integrity, even though in the back of your mind you know they might not use the it for what you intended, you were kind enough to still give. Most of all, integrity is was you do when no one is watching, these are the things that determine what kind of a human you are and most of all......this is what your Father truly judges you on.

Well when it comes to the Christian way, the bible says to give freely and not ? It. I give to veterans cause I have volunteered at va so I know some of the issues vets go through. The Vietnam vets especially. There are ways to know if they truly need help or not.
