I think it depends in what you are looking for. A truck, a sedan, a coupe, a crossover ect. Then the $ you want to spend. Like do you want a Lexus but don't want to spend the $ then look at a Nissan. You may have to narrow your search for more accurate advise.

After a lifetime of buying Ford and GM products I am a believer in imports. Honda, Nissan, Toyota, VW. I'm tired of having the domestics in the shop constantly.

Jdm is the way to go excellent parts supply aftermarket or factory reletively cheap and good quality (not including great wall who thinks asbestos brake pads are ok in a 2011 model car)

Do you have a friend associate etc who is either a car mechanic or car buff? Pay the guy to check out whatever you are thinking of buying its well worth it. As an x mechanic and a racer the most important thing I look at on any used car is what is the history on this type of cars engine/transmission? This is why I choose a Camry over an Accord the Hondas while great cars are notorious for sudden problems in the automatic transmission. On a 5-8 grand car a transmission failure is hardly worth fixing. Anyhow do your homework on bulletin boards and the like for any model/year defects. Then when you have found your choice look for a car with a good history of fluid changes, on any good import car if the engine oil and transmission fluid has been serviced they will go for 200k no problem.
My 1998 Camry has 180k on it now and had 80k when I bought it. After taking it home I replaced all the brakes and shocks/struts as I always do with any used car since I like a firm ride handling and braking. Since then I have had to replace the radiator and battery, that's it. The car still has the original starter, alternator, and all hoses this is the type of shit that will eat you up financially if you are not someone who can do it yourself.
Honestly I do not know anyone with a used Camry who is not happy with it, they are the number one selling car in their class for a reason.

I've had over a dozen vehicles, domestic and foreign. By and large they've all treated me well.
The only real lemon I've ever gotten was a brand new Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle. What a POS! That shiny junk heap was in the shop several times in it's first 500 miles. They didn't stand behind their product at all, either. I finally just gave up and sold it for a loss. Never going green again!
I have actually never owned a Ford. I borrowed a friend's Ford Explorer for a while and the goddamn thing burst into flames while I was on my way to work one day... kind of soured me on the brand...

I had an '89 camry before. It had 350k miles on the original engine before it seized (picked it up in '99 at 125k miles). I can't speak for the V6 versions, but the 4-bangers are solid cars. The only problems I had with it in 11 years of ownership was the CV boot going out every year on it and I had to replace the starter once.

Have I had lemons, HA....
2001 Lincoln LS, it handled great, and it looked great, unfortunately thats where anything good about the vehicle ended. It had a 3.9L V8 motor from Jaguar, I replaced every COIL pack 4x over, valve covers, spark plugs, fuel pump, alternator, and rebuilt the transmission at 68,000 miles. I also replaced all four hub assemblies. To say this car was a monumental piece of shit would be an understatement.
2004 Lincoln Aviator. Wow, it was like punishment owning this right after the LS. So, the Aviator had the 4.6L DOHC V8 Cobra motor in it. Umm, great motor in a Cobra, not so much in a 5,000lb SUV. The top end of the motor had to be rebuilt at 53,000 miles, as it blew up...COIL packs yet again needed to be replaced, all four hub assembly's had to be replaced, I even had one shear apart on me while doing 70mph on the highway, that was a fun ride trying to keep control of the truck so I didn't DIE....Nothing but motor problems with it, and ummm ultimately, the motor sprung an oil leak on the highway and seized, that was lovely.
Lesson learned, I will never own another Lincoln again. In contrast though, I've had remarkable success with Cadillac. On my 4th CTS right now, and they're great, very reliable, seldom have problems, and Cadillac's service is excellent.

LOL, funny you should say that. The one NEW car/Van we bought was a GM and it took a while but we were able to return it via Lemon law. Damn thing flooded inside every time it rained hard even though we let them TRY to fix it 5 different times.

Trust me, it was not easy and we had to get an attorney involved (didnt cost anything except for 1 letter) but once they saw we were not backing down they finally took it back.
I had to fight the extended warranty company for another 3 years to refund me until I finally said OK fine, leave it all in place. We also had a life insurance clause and my wife had since died so I sent them her death certificate asking for the limits of the policy. They were quick to refund my initial policy fee after that.
