The 80gr match ammo has a bullet drop from 75-85" at 600 yrds (with a 100yrd zero) at a 1000 it's almost 150" of drop. At 600 yrds MOA being 6" diameter means that you would have to consistently place 3-5 rnds in a 2" diameter circle with 6.5 FEET of drop. Not to mention the effect of wind, heat, humidity etc.

Can 5.56 hit targets at 600-1000...sure. Would I feel comfortable saying it was 1/4 MOA at 600 dead nuts....not this kid.

Still use my Springfield .308. Not a fan of the heavy rifles and if you have been in the field with them you know why. F carrying that much weight for weeks at a time. I'll take my Springfield and add my Winchester 12-Guage with ammo and still be lighter.

I have no opinion on match shooting. The only real range uses live human targets.

You dumbasses don't know jack about snipe hunting. You can only hunt snipe at night, in a cemetery! Any real snipe hunter knows this.

As long as there is a ditch to chase them down to the guy with the bag. Moonless nights are best so you see their red glowing eyes headed to you.

I absolutely love Robar and would kill for an SR-90. AIA is great as well. They have made a name for themselves producing accurate rifles with detach high cap mags since assault weapons are not allowed there.

Just wish I had 5-6K sittinf around with no place to go.

I just watched a video of a shooter hitting a metal body size target at 1000 yards with an old moisin nagant open site. Trigger modified to a 2lb pull, tapered front side and on a tripod. The same shooter posts 2200 yard hits with 338 lapua, hes a very skilled marksman.

Many ppl don't realize that the Moasin was created as one of the most accurate and durable rifles EVER. Very capable rifle.

Keep in mind there is a big difference hitting a man sized silhouette vs placing multiple rounds in a 2.5" area.

Absolutely, i was just astounded that it was done with open sights. The sniper with the highest number of confirmed kills in history was from finland, during a period of about 100 days during ww2 he managed to kill 550 enemy soldiers using an open sight moison nagant. He became known as the white death

I was in my local gun store the other day trying to purchase a moison, sold out and might not get any more if Canada places trade embargoes on russia. The supply of cheap soviet 7.62mm ammo will probably dry up here too.

That's a great point on the iron sights. Some amazing groups and shots have been made with irons (and still are). The national high power matches at camp perry are all mostly irons matches from 200 yards out to 1k. Palma is irons.

Really it's not the telescope or sights. It comes down to ones ability to read conditions and dope accordingly. Of course proper position (NPA), sight alignment, focus, trigger control, etc are all important factors in steering your bullet to exactly where you intend for it to land. A sub-moa rifle and ammo obviously helps. Pick your tool or choice and have at it.

Shooting sports are great no matter what the discipline and there's always something to be learned when cross training in other disciplines. Plenty of military and civilian police snipers (or other MOS) cross train in irons matches (sometimes using their scopes) to keep up their doping skills and positions. A great time is always had by all and it's a learning experience for everyone involved at each match.

I'm sure lunk's classes will enjoyable just the same.

How about a Robar SR-90 slightly used for $2500?

I like mine. Cheap and functional. Rem 700 Varmint in .308, B&C M40 Stock w/ bedded action and floated barrel, Timney trigger, Harris Bipod, and a SWFA SS 10x on top sitting in some burly rings on a one piece 20moa base. You miss with that thing and it's your own damn fault.

If I had more money? My fav? I don't know, there's a lot of beautiful and laser-accurate rifles out there.

Very true. Honestly, when you get to that level of marksmanship caliber would be a larger concern to me (dependent on parameters of what needs to be accomplished).....a pre-'64 Winchester model 70 also would be acceptable...
