Gym Scene
I am a regular person who just wears athletic shorts a white t-shirt and my nikes to workout( leg day I got my old skateboarding shoes because they are flat and have a stronger outer wall to push out against)
The gym I go to lately since I've moved around is full of people who seem like they spend more time and money on their apparel than giving 2 craps about getting results? Did gym fads always come and go through the years? Sometimes when I watch 80's bodybuilder videos I notice they all dressed in extremely fluorescent one piece clown suits? Was that the fad back then? I know when I go to Maine sometimes I see people walking the track wearing Argon socks and there was even one gentleman who cut his shirt right below his chest.....but he didn't have the abdominal region to show off. Like that was a style?
I was just wondering if someone would enlighten me on some of these so called "fashion" statements.
And do you guys also go to a gym where people are more focused on their clothing aesthetics rather than actually training? I wish I would stumble upon an iron dungeon and workout around others who would inspire me.

I always dress relatively well no matter where I'm going, for the gym it's cheaper clothes but they still look good. I get strong OCD feelings if my colours don't match or my clothing is unproportionate, so basically all my clothes are pretty nice.

I wear MMA shorts and usually an Under Armour moisture wicking shirt and Reebok Crossfit Sneakers. (Although, I admit I HATE Crossfit)

When I played football and baseball in highschool then went on to play baseball in college, my motto was you gotta look good to play good. If you have good gear you feel good. If you feel good you perform good. In case you haven't figured this out yet, this workin out thing is as much mental as physical. Now gear up and go get those results.

I wear shorts and a black wife beater or sleeveless moisture wicking shirt. I sweat a lot and can't stand sleeves on my shirts when working out.

I have always been a sweater, after 15 min on the bike I have puddles under me. I have to carry a small towel to wipe myself down during my workout, I can wring out my shirt when I am done, the wife hates my wet shirts in the laundry.

All old tees, some with sleeves cut off. All have some sort of paint or bleach stains. Either old work shorts with some sort of stains on them, or if i will be doing cardio, then $10-$15 workout shorts that I picked up on sale at Kohls or somewhere.
Usually the worst dressed, but typically the hardest working MFer in there. People stare.

I'm usually the worst dressed too. I don't typically give a shit about how I'm dressed in the first place, especially there. It's not a fashion show. Besides, I'm the type of person who doesn't feel "like a man" when I go clothes shopping. So I try to avoid it whenever possible. I'm definitely not going to worry about what I'm dressed like at the gym where I'm supposed to be getting all smelly and sweaty.

track suits usually.... addidas(very popular over here, like they think its ****ing armani or something), nike, etc... in the summer, shorts with a t-shirt....back home in the US, I have seen people wear armani v-neck shirts to the gym...I gotta draw the line at wearing non-gym clothes to the gym, especially armani, look like a doucher...

I'm an extrovert so I'm quick to assume I am out of place and get self concious. The new gym I workout at it seems it is a fashion show more than anything else. So now I stick to either before 11:00am and after 7:00pm for working out so I don't have to stick out like a sore thumb wearing just a white tee and my gym shorts. I like working out with the older crowd around. They are willing to have a decent conversation without trying to immediately criticize how I work out. Someone said on here one time..the day you stop worrying about weight is the day you look better. Everyone in my gym looks like shit minus a few of the hardcore lifters. When they show up though I usually end up watching them for a while. Its very motivating.
Thegodfather-we have someone at my gym. I usually see him around 3-4pm. He comes in looking like a jersey shore ripoff. Jelled hair, cologne is overwhelming and most of the time he just does biceps or any muscle group that can be done staring in the mirror. Did I mention he wears jean shorts and work boots? It is like he is ready to make a movie or he has a photo shoot.

Ahh - a fine useless topic to enter my .02 on
I see the same shit at the gym, but not quite. I see the most elite looking gym goers wearing the most high end shit.
AirMax's, Jordan & Nike - are top along with beats headphones
I do all, my regi gym gear is about 300 Bucks. Shirt - 30, Jordan Shorts - 50, AirMax's - 160. I don't do the beats, but I use my woman's whenever - 200.
Why not? Me going to the gym is the closest thing I do to going out.
And the girls look hella good wearing the fancy shit too. Those yoga pants are about 80 a pair.

It must just be how I grew up (wealthy family) that I don't seek out the expensive stuff anymore. In my eyes those who try to buy high end clothing (Gucci, jean paul gaultier, valentino suits) are trying to show their status. Extremely wealthy people generally don't show off unless they are young money. Pfft my grandmother and grandfather have gold jewelry, but they only wear it around the house. Never in public. I guess it was just how I was raised.
I do appreciate a good pair of shoes though and a nice car, but kohls suits me well. Now I completely understand if you are going to a formal ball, outing, or political event then it is pertinent to wear something nice, but when I see someone wearing an Ed Hardy shirt at the gym its like...Why did you waste your money on that? And if you are going to waste your money and flaunt it. Be classy.
-
To me it's more about comfort. The expensive shit really does fit better. Shoes feel way better, shorts are a good strong material & a good length. Also the shirts are made from a good weight of thread.
I wore cheap shit forever. But, it's like not washing my Cadillac. Might as well show pride in what you got.
I have one set of quality Nautica dress clothes. Well, 2 - but that's it.
Also this shit lasts forever. I still wear my almost 3 year old Jordan's and they still look good.

I probably also have deep rooted animosity towards expensive stuff, because that was all that was ever bought for me as a child. Ha not to get off the topic completely, but I remember as a kid..I never could understand why other people had such small houses compared to what I grew up in or why people had cars that broke down. I thought everyone had money. Now I'm just more appreciative of the small things in the world. And I think Kohls still sells quality clothing for a fair price. If I had kids I would take them to kohls. Teach them values because I sure as hell missed that part when I was younger.
-
I would so hate to be you - lmao
No, but missing out on values when younger is an issue. Unless you're completely shallow and just don't give a shit like many who are born into money.
Weird to say - I'm happy for the hell I came from. After living on the streets as a kid with your parents for a while, you really see what's what in the world.
I always think of shit like that. How can these values be taught? My son already has what I do.

Ya some of my childhood friends are ehhhh...it bothers me that the family still associates with them. Not all of my family is completely shallow and hallow (though a few are) Those that are jewish in the family..You would never know that they had money until you entered their house. That is where I took my values from after I realized I was a spawn of satan when I became older and took everything for granted. I still sometimes have to keep myself in check because my old thought process will revive itself. I'm not judgemental, but I can be very crass if caught at the wrong time. My children are most likely fcked. I just have to make sure I marry a very simple and practical woman because I would be the worst role model for my children.

Is it a mental thing? The better you feel dressed the better you perform? Someone mentioned something along those lines earlier in this thread.

Yeah look good lift good. Doesn't really matter IMO, as long as you're comfortable and putting the work in, wear whatever the fvck you wanna wear.

I was just like that when I started. Wore a my most beat up shorts, shoes and a holly t shirt.
Then I got into gymming as a ritual - and it all slowly changed. Now I'm like the full on gym nut. I look like this 24x7 though unless I have work to do, then I wear my beat up jeans & nasty shirt of some sort - since I ruin my clothes like no other when I work.

You look pretty good in your picture. How long have you been training on a consistent basis? I was the same way. Kinda came to the gym just to go. Never had a plan and I never cared.

I gotta agree with Khaz on this one...my ocd prevents me from mis~matching too much even in my lounge clothes at home. I figure I go to the gym 5~6 days a week so I want to have nice shit that lasts wash after wash. There are plenty of people who fit the bill you're describing...dressed all out, barley doing shit. There's also the group that's not dressed as nice, still barely doing shit. Worst thing to me is the lazy fvcks that go to the gym just to stand around and suck each other off. I'm there to kill it.
