secure emails
Ok just wondering what everyone uses.
I have always used safe mail but recently have heard lots of stories about users and sources emails being hacked on safe mail. Anyone else hear or experienced this?
Either way not using safe mail again.
I've only used free ones in past but might go with a paid one this time.
Just checking options out and opinions.

the only service I know of that offers encryption from sender to recipient is proton mail. they've placed their servers is Switzerland to be free of US laws and anything kept on the servers is encrypted so they (protonmail) can't read your mail like gmail does. they offer free and paid service. the only problem is the waiting list to be a user.

Yeah, gmail is beyond stupid. After all the press about google archiving even deleted mails for an eternity because storage is so cheap now. Write something questionable on gmail once and it will be there forever, just waiting for an email from anyone in LE, and then it will be cheerfully handed over.
Here are some places to look at: mutemail.com, neomailbox, anonymousspeech.com, unspyable.com, countermail. All have servers (back when I checked anyway) in non-US reachable countries (theoretically) like Nassau, Switzerland, Sweden, Panama.

I wouldn't say any of those email services are truly secure. Even the ones in Switzerland! The government hires nerds to crack those type of sites and their encryption algorithms.
If you're just buying or selling a little gear, the best thing to do is use a browser like Tor (despite the government controlling a huge number of nodes it uses to bounce packets) and setup a temporary email address with one of the free sites. Once your business is done there, cease using it forever and start over next time. It'll make it too much of a hassle for anyone looking to eavesdrop. And since you're small potatoes, it's not really worth the effort to catch you.
It would also help to conduct business through those weekly motels that have free wifi available and use fake IDs when checking in.

Agreed, agreed, agreed. Look how Switzerland bent over for the US government with regards to disclosing US bank account holders, etc. Same thing with Panama, it used to be a tax haven and many US companies have offices there as a result, but the US leaned on them for taxes, and consequently I wonder what would happen if they were looking for someone worthwhile who was using an email server based there.
Completely agree that TOR would be smarter, but I think most people won't take the time to learn to use it, so that's why I didn't mention it. But it is well worth looking into if you do anything online you don't want others to know about.
When I use (more) secure email, I use a place that moves their servers around, always out out of the US and Europe, so they use places like Panama, Malaysia, Japan, etc. They also don't keep copies of anything on their servers, so unless YOU keep a copy (by intentionally ticking a box) even if someone found them, they have nothing to give. This is a good practice, IMO. I think lots of people shoot themselves in the foot by keeping a bunch of their own private stuff around. YOU are almost always easier to find than some server somewhere.
Lastly, I agree that the feds are not bothered with some guy somewhere buying a bit of gear - but if you are selling, and do enough business you are far more likely to end up on someone's radar.

Also (and then I'll shut up, haha!), I wouldn't use a free service - think about it, why would someone who ran a free service put themselves at ANY risk in order to keep your info private? They have no interests that run with yours.
And hushmail (in case anyone is thinking of using them) has already handed info over to the feds. And there is a lot of concern that safe-mail (another free provider) is problematic as well. I didn't look into it too closely because I use another company and so it didn't affect me, but I think some techie was digging and found a bit of code that seemed to be looking at content and flagging things that were questionable. So if that is your provider, and you are doing something private, I would google around and have a look at that stuff.

I don't use my SafeMail for anything I wouldn't use Yahoo for
Selling a little juice < < LoL
PGP is a must, even then I get scared of shit. . . . . Look up a PGP tutorial. . . . You will need a few things to let it rip
When I do work, TOR & a long PGP - Even then I get the shakes

I would always assume that somebody is keeping a copy of any email on any server (even if they're not). Because despite what they say, it's always possible for packets to be intercepted or for the mail service company to lie about not keeping records. The trick is to assume you're being watched and to keep uses of email addresses very short.
Yeah, if they're selling enough to get under the radar of the feds, they definitely need to keep changing everything regularly to stay ahead.

TOR! So few people even know it exists, let alone how to use it. I'm impressed
Safe-mail TOS explicitly states that they will cooperate with LE if requested in case anyone who uses it didn't read it. Phvk safemail. The case seems to be that they have been hacked recently too, multiple times. And people were making the hacked content public.

I can be lazy and find Tor and PGP a bit of a PITA, and I stay on the right side of the law, BUT when it comes down to it, I still want to watch bc I don't want to give anyone any reason to want to violate my privacy or be concerned with me.
My hubby wants a VPN for everything, just as a general fvck you to NSA and other authorities, but I am not sure it doesn't just invite scrutiny.
I didn't realise that safe-mail's TOS actually says they would comply with LE. Best to stay away from them for sure! Thanks for posting this - good for everyone to know with whom they are dealing.

Some things I deal in even a PGP & TOR don't feel safe. . . . The internet isn't the most secure place
