Sobering Perspective
Have been largely on, sometimes off at this gym for 35 years. For as long as I can remember there has been this muscular dude there, who also was a personal trainer. Killer body & from what I recall , close to what Kel looks like (last time he posted a pic), big yet defined. Thinking now this dude is in his mid 50’s. Kind of the guy that no matter how often you go to the gym, he is there, working out.
Today I’m doing press downs and see the guy with a 4 pronged cane. OK I’m thinking, knee surgery; only his left arm is limp and he’s dragging his leg a bit. I was in shock. I rarely spoke to this dude ever, but this hit me like a ton of bricks. I was actually mumbling to myself “fuck, fuck, fuck!”.
He recognized me, we made eye contact, did the nod and fist bump. His trainer or therapist smiled, they knew that I knew.
I almost cried while I watched him in the mirror. The therapist was helping him grip a 2 1/2 pound plate so that he could do arm curls.

So what happened to him?

I hope it’s only temporary lost. And what an amazing drive to be in the gym! I’ll pray for him.

just to set a slightly different perspective here .. my best friend died from a stroke (not a lifter or a drug or gear user .. was a very successful emergency room RN). a girl in high school I know had a stroke that left her with speech problems (not a gear user).
this is a normal part of life and has been for thousands of years. we all know these people . I'm only saying this because its NOT something unique to AAS usage or bodybuilding .

A stroke is like a nap for the brain. On a serious note, also scares me. And I am WAY older than Kel.

Freaked me out.
BTW, not my intention to relate this to AAS usage. If I were a betting man, I’d say this guy was natural.
On one hand, hurt and realized how fragile we all are. But on the other hand . . .
2 1/2 pound curls. His bicep’s muscle belly’s fullness destroys anyone’s here. 2 1/2 pounds, and he’s going at it like it’s another day at the gym.

Scary shit if you actually stop to think about it

Dude still had the tape over his carotid where they did surgery. Just guessing by his past ever-present gym habits that he probably got discharged from the hospital & his first stop was the gym.
Don’t know the man personally, but I am going to be hoping and praying that he gains more and more control over that side.

Scary shit, a bad stroke will ruin your life
No real way of preventing this either, I think genetics plays a big part in it rather than just eating or activity habits
If it happens you have a 50/50 chance from what i have heard

Stroke is just one way we can get fvcked within a moment’s time
A nice aneurism, maybe a heart a attack - random car accident & so on

So of course he was working out yesterday.
No cane, balance improved & has a little shoulder motion. Stroke recovery for involved arms & legs starts close to the body and moves down towards the hands& feet. Plus, the faster you start getting a return, typically the more complete & successful the recovery is going to be.
Put a huge smile on my face seeing that. Won't be back to that gym to next weekend, cant wait.

Hell yes!
He’s getting nice shoulder and elbow control & he’s starting to get his hand back. It was tough watching him struggle with those spring loaded clasps/hooks on the pull down machine, but he did it.
The dude was training a client!

Life changes sometimes on a drop of a dime, and there is nothing we can do about it but hit our next tough challenge in life.

Being as real as it gets here - this kind & all kinds of big real life shit makes other things seem so minor

Saw the dude doing a full workout today.
Still can tell he had a stroke, slight change in his walking, balance, posture . . . . .
But . . . .
225 on th bench for multiple sets of clean/full reps.
Big smile.
