Found $10K in a purse today and returned it.

There's the short summary. Found an old lady's purse in a cart at a grocery store today and opened it to find $10k rolled up, multiple IDs, a phone and police badge for some reason. I called the lady who lost it and she gave me $500 for returning it. As it stands I'm well off but it was tempting to fuck with.

Factors why I didn't take it?

I'm fairly well off as it is

Money isn't very important to my life in general

(Most obvious one) there are cameras everywhere in that parking lot, would be totally moronic to even consider stealing it

My friends (most of whom are way poorer than me) all called me stupid for not taking it but I highly disagree. Honor is important to me as is not accepting easy ways out. Hard work in all aspects is needed to succeed.

If you believe in Karma I think you just loaded the karma bank for a good while. You still scored $500 so it’s a win.

For me it goes further than karma, I believe the universe has an equilibrium and this will balance out in the future for me in some incredibly positive way.

Poorer people would proabably be more inclined to take it.

I bet the penalty for taking the badge assuming it's real is probably worse than stealing that amount of money.

Define "well-off"... It is a relative term, to say the least. I mean n disrespect to the OP, but this is just my impression. It might be a challenge to put a monetary amount on this term...??? As to "why he said it", perhaps there is one member here who might question his veracity (stinks of "stolen valor" to me...)...

Personally, "chapeau bas" to you fiddlesticks!!! Takes a real honorable guy to walk away from that one!!!

I'm young which amplifies how "well off" i consider myself, own a house got no debt and have great jobs where I can make 10k really easily over like 6ish weeks at least in warm weather if I kick it into high gear ( my adderall prescription is useful ..). I'm not Bill Gates but 10k isn't a huge deal to me. Taking it wouldn't have done much for me. probably buy a 3rd macaw with it.. or build a pond lol

    Right-on bro!!!
Love to hear stories of success!!!
I am not so young, but I have a quite similar situation : homeowner (100% debt free on that, and she sits on 6 hectares of rolling Polish hills and forest), have 2 4x4 trucks, my own small business (English school)... And best of all; I and my wife don't owe a dime to anyone... I would consider myself to be in the same boat; well-off (subject to personal definition of course).

    Peace bro!!!

Ps: I might have taken the money..

This is a misnomer and generally not true. I live in one of the poorest countires and steling almost never happens. Partially because there is 1.4 billion people so almost 99% time someone else is around to see what you are doing.

I would have turned it into the police station, that way if it was not claimed I could have kept the whole thing. If it was claimed, then I did a good thing. Either way it's a win-win

If my memory serves me correctly ; isn't the possession of a "real" police badge a crime, in the hands of a regular citizen? I thought I had heard that it was against the law to have that, outside of perhaps collectioner, etc... A crime, but certainly not a felony, depending on what you are doing with it.
    Anyone?

She said it was her home mortgage money but I meant multiple IDs of her own e.g license, Sam's club card etc

Nice thing to do and the right thing to do, but saying a poor person would have took it is not right at all.

I once found a $5000 wad outside kroger. Called in local PD they said they normally keep it since there's no way to prove it and its usually drug money. I asked in kroger and nobody came asking I guess I kept the drug money.

You’ve got morals! Good deed and clear conscience and you are up $500!!!!

Since you are well off perhaps consider donating to your favorite charity!

    Me too!

Did the police badge match one or all of the multiple IDs?????

Was the police badge legit or a prop?

How old was the lady? Does she lift? In shape?

Does she run an escort service???

The thing is this fiddle, to as many people you think are poorer than you, there are just as many who are more well off than you and would consider you poor and more likely to steal it.

The term "poor" is relative. Also, for you to have that opinion that "poorer people" lack morality and would steal it, basically says the only thing separating you and stealing it is a monetary figure of income. So without that, you'd be inclined to steal as well.

The only thing separating you and ideations to commit theft is green paper money and not a set of morals.

You can back peddle all you want and try to put a spin on what you said to make yourself look better, but i let you go many posts to 100% put your foot in your mouth then I decided to post this.

Like the fella above stated, stolen valor. You did it to look good and come here and brag about it. A real sincere kind person would kept it quiet and took comfort in his own mind instead of fishing for a pat on the back.

Bro for you to say that is the complete opposite of intelligence, it's pure ignorance.

Having money or lack there of has nothing to do with doing the right thing.

I have come across people who have little to their name that do more for people than most rich people would.

Money does NOT make a man or woman moral to do the right thing.
If you want to get technical, most rich people are rich because they are cheap and don't really contribute to society and people who need help.

What you did in my opinion ... And I say OPINION for a reason because that's what it is ...
For a very selfish reasons ... So others will praise you for your "good deed"

To me , doing a selfless act is doing something nice and expecting nothing in return or shouting it out as if you are better then the person next to you .
And speaking on how much money you have and judging people who don't have money completely eliminates any good deed you even did .

And plus you took the $500 correct ? You're well off , what did you do with that money ? Did you give it to a homeless person,. Pay for a "poor" persons meal ? Donate it to charity.
... I can go on and on for days.

My gf constantly mentions how much she does for me ... It basically means nothing if it's spoken about with that type of arrogance.

Oh ! And you mention cameras ... Why?

Why did you notice them ? As you had the bag , did you browse to see if there were cameras ? If so , why ? A moraled individual would have just went straight to the first place to leave it with someone who can further move it in the right direction .

And why look on it ? Yes we as humans are curious , but that's someone's private belongings ...

Everything here just makes no sense and more so with everything you are saying just doesn't say "good Samaritan"

You can go on and on for days with contradicting bullshit I guess, There are so many errors in what you wrote I won't even begin because I'm trying to be positive.

However I will point out the INCREDIBLE hypocriocy in generalizing rich people being ok but not for poor people. And btw, I am not rich nor have I bragged about anything I have so idk what that shit is about.

I'm such a fucking piece of shit that I let a pretty much disabled dude with absolutely fuck all live in my house for free.

Do you want some sort of award for doing something good for someone ?

There is nothing hypocritical in what I said .

You have made very arrogant and ignorant statements and I'm going to praise you for acting like you did something nice when you come here mocking people that don't have money .

I'm not claiming every person who has money to throw away is a shit bag but 4 out of 5 I've met or know are complete assholes that give 2 shits for anyone but themselves and their money.

Where as most that don't have a stove to cook on will literally give their last dollar to a dog shelter or buy food for a stray dog or cat.

Keep justifing and praising yourself for doing something good when it should be. ASIC practice

So I made this post because it's a very rare and interesting occurrence, not to brag or whatever, my pet macaws are more interesting to me than any amount of money or valuables I have. Shit my old pet duck is more interesting to me.

Go read what YOU write dude. I'm not the only person that has either questions or comments to the things you have stated.

If you call what others have to say dumb , then you truly are missing the point to everything that is being said.

Cool. Couldn't care less about what you think "the point" of this is lmfao.

Go read what you wrote and look at all the generalizations you've said. I'm not gonna even put effort into this argument which is akin to a 10 year old's.

This is a great example why I tend to keep to myself, people are gonna whine and bitch and be cunts about EVERYTHING. Rather not deal with that. I could have saved a fucking dying baby and some twat is gonna whine and bitch and I'm wrong because X or who the fuck even knows. My awesome life shall not be brought down
