Confused about what martial to study!!!!
Hi.
I am trhinkin of doin a martial art as part of my cardio routine but they are so many and so many styles to each art!
I really need peoples help when choosing one!
What martial art should I do?
I want one that has a bit of everything in it and has an ancient background.
I like ninjutsu but cannot find a dojo near me that has classes on the weekends....
I like shaolin kung fu except there are no high kicks in it.
I have also considered jui jitsu bit I am not sure if that has strikes and weapons training in it.
Is possible to learn a martial art from a dvd as I have no work schedule and do not know what days I will be free?

If one of your considerations is as part of a cardio routine than choose an style that actually has you working out. BJJ, kickboxing, and Muay Thai have high levels of actual training.

I don't know if anyone ever thanks you for your interesting posts ?
I wanted to tell you the stuff Steven Seagal does is impressive and effective . In doing this I found his official website , still laughing , but found out he's from the D .
If you can , check out his official website . When you buy some of his merchandise . You'll be taking the first step in being a Badass .

Snipey...just wondering what cardio have you been doing since you joined?
If its just to loose weight, i personally dont think it really matters as to which one you pick...with the results your going to get as to weightloss.
If i was looking to loose weight by any form of fighting ...it would be boxing.
If im to be totally honest with you mate i think you need to sit down and think...do i want to loose weight...or do i want to be the next bruce lee

Steven Seagal was exposed as a fake in "Combat" magazine several years ago. Anyone with Martial art experience can see that his films are all heavily choreographed nonsense. He claims to have been an expert in Aikido and had won countless competitions. "Combat" researched this and found he hadn't even been in any of the competitions he said he'd won.

I have trained in several different arts over the last 30 years. I started with Judo as a kid and have "tweaked" my training and styles depending on my own needs and requirements. e.g for full on cardio I train Muay Thai, for cardio and stamina BJJ, as an "all rounder" I go for Pencak Silat.
I know quite a few decent places to train in London and the South East. Let me know exactly what you want to get out of it and your height, and weight (can make a huge difference) and I'll suggest what I believe to be your best option. PM me your actual location and I'll let you know what decent dojo/kwoons/gyms are in your location and what they teach.
No, it's not possible to learn just from a DVD.Last edited by blackrose9; 01-09-2010 at 11:40 AM. Reason: I typed in the wrong place! Lol

I was thinking of some kind of kung fu because I like the quickness of it and I love , Jackie Chan's, Bruce Lee's and I love kung fu films in general....
But they are so many different styles!
I mostly want it for self defense but also to use offensively aswell now as I am using diet to loose weight!
When I had my height measured last I was 5ft 8in but I thing they got it wrong.
My weight when I measured it last was 15st 6.8lb.

try looking into Wing Chun.. (Kung Fu)
make sure you find a good instructor, there are a lot of frauds out there..
My instructor was trained by Wong Shun Leung (who also trained Bruce Lee), and is very connected in the local Chinese community.. Whenever Jackie Chan is in town, he comes and trains with us..

Learn something practical which gives you the possibility to fight against any other martial artists from the very first beginning, regardless their backgrounds and level.
Forget weapons and ancient background, go direct to the point.
Do not waste your time, literally, with other disciplines but learn the only one effective that teaches the same things regardless the belt color.
After just six months of constant training, still a white belt novice, you are amazed how you will be able to submit balck belts of any other arts!!!
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
You will thank me later.

^^^bjj uses the entire body when "rolling" or sparring, also muay thai is as exhausting as boxing or more imho... I've trained at boxing, muay thai, and bjj and i would have to say that if you are just doing it as a workout then i'd do muay thai as the training drills are endless high intensity kicks, punches and elbows and knee's. But sparring (rolling) in bjj is almost as tiring to me, only difference is certain positions provide rest time during drills. Muay thai is more of hitting pads until you spar so you don't stop. Muay thai is the only one that had me wanting to throw up lol. But like i said this is all my opinion on how much cardio work is used. As far as effective skills i would go hands down to bjj. Imho.
Good luck bro!

I did a muay thai class once up in east london at a club called k o.
I sweatted alot then but when i did it at another club i swadid not sweat much.
I think the fist time in east ldn was in the summer and the other time was in the autumn winter.
K O club was very intense and had alot of sparring in it while the other club mainly did bag and pad work.

As some have stated...if it is for cardio, you need to pick one that is more cardio driven into the core training plan.
There are so many options and let me tell you the number one variable to consider. IT IS THE INSTRUCTOR. You can put any great style with a crappy instructor and it will be the biggest waste of time. Also, do it because you like the science/study/discipline. Don't expect to be some billy bad ass who can now knock out dudes because you have been doing it for a few months. It doesn't work that way and that is only in the movies.
If you really just want to do it for cardio and nothing else...than I would suggest doing that one LA Boxing gym or something like that. That is all just fancy cardio that punch the air and bags and stuff. I am sure it will give you just a good cardio workout though.

your best bet is to find a mma gym with a boxing or muay thai class
just the everyday cardio warm up they do will shred you in no time
youll leave a puddle of sweat each day part of the reason i say join a mma gym is for a few reasons
one your looking for cardio no other style has more cardio in it
two your core will get the best it has ever been
three youll learn real world fighting flashy high flying kicks are for show
four in a mma gym your not another paying customer most gyms are like a close knit family
learning from dvds dont work u can go thru the moves but u dont have someone to show u the right way to do it i use them to learn the basics of the move then ask my teacher during free time to learn how to apply it right
and this is coming from someone whos been in this game for close to 8 years

i know for a fact his teacher was Ishisaka Kiyoshi and he studied with him till he died in 70s
2nd off what movie dont have heavy choreographed parts to it thats how they make it safe for all actors
and by your statement jackie chan never studied all his stuff is very much choreographed
and one last thing your magazine never had any proof that he was fake hell i can say your a midget with d size tittys on your back dont make it true

Peking Opera School
In learning Peking opera, attending students developed skills in martial arts, acrobatics and tumbling, they would train up to 18 hours some days with lil or no food and since they were under a contract that stated if they didnt do as told or wernt doing it right the master could beat them to just about death
and if im not mistaken the monks taught these roaming actors there fighting style and if that is true even tho its training for showbiz its still a Martial Art form

Muay Thai or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu all the way. Both are great cardio especially once you start sparring (or rolling in the case of BJJ). Either way, if you decide down the road that you want to be a great fighter and not just in great shape you will not have wasted your time. These are arguably the 2 most effective empty hand fighting styles around.
Have fun.
