    Steak before bed?

Would steak be a good alternative for casein before bed?? I am thinking about just eating steak instead of drinking a casein shake before bed but I do not know if the protein is as slow to digest and would be enough to hold my body for the night. 8oz sirloin 69/0/11 400cals I know it would be more expensive but I am thinking about having a beef butchered and saving some money.

Sweet, I was thinking it would be but did not know because of the fat in it. Its nice to have something I can eat and feel good about before bed instead of a shake. What else would anyone recommend?

Not only would steak be a good alternative - it's the best choice along with lean ground beef. Beef is very slow digesting, so the reason becomes obvious immediately. Casein or cottage cheese aren't even a close second (although fine choices otherwise).

I get the plain fat free greek yogurt. It tastes like... nothing... just yogurt. You'll want to sweeten it up - I use splenda. Don't buy the flavored stuff as it's loaded with sugar.

Agreed, Bison is an EXCELLENT source. Personally, I like the flavor of beef better, but that's probably because I (we all) grew up on it, and I haven't had enough bison to make the jump.

are we talking ground beef or the leaner ground sirloin? I have been contimplating the same thing cause Im getting bored with the cottage cheese and I dont wanna spend the $ on a 5lb'er of casein.

BTW, how are you guys eating or preparing the "beef" before bed?

Are we talking browning it with like onions and peppers, draining the fat then tupperwaring it for when needed?????

The leaner the better IMO, so whatever you can get - i'd say no fattier then 93/7 though.

That's what I do, cook it off ahead of time, and store like I do with all my food. Onions and peppers is up to you.

love it, ive been eating a 4oz sirloin and 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. Taste way better than a shake and is just as fast if you cook ahead.

IF you're sodium-conscious just remember the cottage cheese is very, very high in it. Sodium is obviously aesthetic and even then, one cottage cheese serving won't necessarily make or break anything BUT we're talking like 500 mg in a 1/2 cup. I was eating it forever until I looked at the sodium and was like, "damn, I've been avoiding salt on my food but still eating this - I'm an idiot"

Thanks for the info on the sodium...I did not know it had that much sodium. I guess ill just stick with the steak and only use the cottage cheese in hard times

hey guys, food for thought. We are having beef/sirloin before bed because its a slow digestiong protein, right? How much faster is ground turkey or chicken? Im sure the protein count is similiar and the fat content is definately lower ( based on 6-8 oz. )....Are we splitting hairs here??

We're not splitting hairs. The digestion rate is about twice as fast for poultry.

yea Im going to start having an 8oz sirloin or some 93/7 ground beef(cheaper). I was just using the cottage cheese to make my steaks last longer. I think 93/7 ground beef may be the better choice though.

Ground beef is perfectly fine, it's the fact that it's beef is what we're concerned with.

i use spleda or fresh berries (i mash them in a zip lock bag and stir them in) sweetens it up naturally.

Funny, I actually used both, but didn't mash em up - good idea though! I have to try it! My go to was blueberries, splenda, and just a bit of granola (not the best, I know).
