protein shake-a silent killer
hey guys,
im looking into protein shakes and the long term effects, im hoping to devise a post summing up all you need to know about shakes,
its shocking, i wasnt aware these shakes have so many long term effects such as blood cancer, stomach cancer etc.
if any of you have any experiences, links to good resources i.e. journals, studies, i would really appreciate if you could post these up.
many thanks

Even Sucralose has some studies that that confirm danger.

this is the dumbest thing ive ever seen. ANYTHING in excess is bad for you. that's all you should concerned with. everyone is going to die someday, the chances of it being from an artificial sweetner or your protein is so close to none it shouldn't even be considered. You have a better chance getting hit by a car leaving the damn gym...

I think im gonna go read my jugs fine print to see its long term effects and side effects. I think they might even include death. I want to know where you heard this ridiculous claim. Yes eating real food is better than drinking 10 shakes a day. But it is not because it causes cancer

Don't start bringing up this aspartame is bad for you crap.

I don't see any 'studies' on that link.
Just a mercola article.
An article which references this site: http://www.holisticmed.com/
^^A Holistic healing site.
Both sites reference another compound, as opposed to sucralose itself... demonizing sucralose by attributing the 'related' compound's attributes to sucralose.
I'm yet to see a study however.
I would be interested in seeing one if you can find it.

little ot - but doesnt acesulfame K (sweetener also) go through the body undigested or assimilated at all?
I also dont wanna hear how an artificial sweetener at a huge dose gave rats cancer (if it can even be found). Dosage equivalent in humans to like 2 lbs a day or some crap - study or not.....

how the ***&^%&^*(&(*&% did you come up with this?
IF YOU DO ANYTHING ENOUGH IT WILL KILL YOU.
If you think this is deadly then you should probably live in a bubble.
But then again who am i to say who should live in a bubble, i practically do...
btw some people think the flouride in water makes people fat.
yeah that wopping >.001% makes you fat! NOT under excersising and over eating at micky Dees!Last edited by z28pwr; 01-28-2009 at 11:54 PM.

i didn't realize there where so many stupid, ignorant people out there, do you all really believe all these chemicals in whey protein actually does good for your body? most of the chemicals used are banned in many countries, i dont think they ban them because of the benefits it brings to people. why is it when you go to hospitals moaning about stomach aches etc the first thing a doctor asks is 'do you take supplements, protein shakes etc'. ask you own doctor if its a good thing, lets see what they have to say?
secondly protein shakes have not been around long enough for accurate studies to be carried out, analyzing, measuring sides, determining possible causes, all the body building company's aim to do, is make a profit, simple. they dont care about what we buy and put down our throats.
finally i wasnt asking for your silly opinions. keep them too yourselves. i was asking for anyone who had any genuine resources, links to journals, studies etc.

"ask the doctor if its a good thing"
hahaha.
docs think half the shit we do is bad for you, like steroids !
-
Funny that one would ask for the experiences of 'stupid' people.
Show me the 'chemicals' found in plain protein powder.
Your options are: whey protein, soy protien, egg protein, micellar casein, hemp, gemma pea protein, rice or protein.
I'd like you list these 'harmful chemicals'.
List the countries these 'harmful chemicals' are banned in.
A doctor's never asked me either of the above questions.
Who the hell goes to the doc for a stomach ache anyway?
Really?
Pubmed says otherwise.

A role for milk proteins and their peptides in cancer prevention.
Parodi PW.
A role for the amount and type of dietary protein in the etiology of cancer has not been studied extensively. Nevertheless, there is no compelling evidence from epidemiological studies to indicate that protein, at levels usually consumed, is a risk factor for cancer.
On the other hand, animal studies suggest that certain peptides and amino acids derived from dietary proteins may influence carcinogenesis. The predominant protein in milk, casein, its peptides, but not liberated amino acids, have antimutagenic properties.
Animal models, usually for colon and mammary tumorigenesis, nearly always show that whey protein is superior to other dietary proteins for suppression of tumour development.
This benefit is attributed to its high content of cystine/cysteine and gamma-glutamylcyst(e)ine dipeptides, which are efficient substrates for the synthesis of glutathione. Glutathione is an ubiquitous cellular antioxidant that directly or through its associated enzymes destroys reactive oxygen species, detoxifies carcinogens, maintains proteins in a reduced state and ensures a competent immune system.
Various experiments showed that tumour prevention by dietary whey protein was accompanied by increased glutathione levels in serum and tissues as well as enhanced splenic lymphocyte proliferation, phagocytosis and natural killer, T helper and cytotoxic T cell activity.
Whey protein components, beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin and serum albumin were studied infrequently, but results suggest they have anticancer potential. The minor component lactoferrin has received the most attention; it inhibits intestinal tumours and perhaps tumours at other sites. Lactoferrin acts by induction of apoptosis, inhibition of angiogenesis, modulation of carcinogen metabolising enzymes and perhaps acting as an iron scavenger. Supplementing cows with selenium increases the content of selenoproteins in milk, which on isolation inhibited colon tumorigenesis in rats.
