    **Squats vs Leg Press for leg growth** (Poll, debate and discussion)

    Now take a step back and read the thread before your ego jumps out of line and says ''your a ***** if you dont squat and nothing is better than squats for leg development''

    Ok so whats your opinion?

    For the average trainer with some development already which is the better exercise for MAXIMUM MUSCLE STIMULATION AND GROWTH....

    Subjects to note....

    * Safety
    * Long Term Risks (if any)
    * Training Styles (HIT, Volume etc...)
    * Difficulty of movement
    * Intensity Techniques available (drop sets, forced reps, negatives etc)

    I vote Leg Press.......

    Why?

    The ability to overload safely and quickly makes this a better movement for smashing my legs...

    Forced reps are my favourite, followed by drops and rest pauses.... You simply cannot do this in a safe way with Squat's

    However Squats are at the beging of mst of my leg training sessions... However I will soon be going to Squats one week and LP the other week...

    Neither one is better than the other for size, overall developement goes to squat. Sometimes I hit legs with presses extra slow with a spotter to stimulate growth. I couuldnt do that safely using squats.

    i pick squats, but on the contrary many bodybuilders swear by leg presses and others squats
    all powerlifters swear by squats
    for athletic development squats are king
    for safety reasons squats also beat leg presses, as long as you have safety pins, spotters, and use good form with weight that wont break it (training the right way) the squat wins, leg presses are bad for safety reasons not because you will injure yourself on the spot, but the long term toll it takes on your body, the leg press is not a natural movement and places your lower back in an unnatural position which down the road will lead to problems, also when most people leg press its 1/4th reps will place extreme shearing forces on the knees and its also in an unnatural state
    in comparison of difficulty, anybody who thinks leg presses are harder than squats obviously doesnt squat
    i dont use any bodybuilding methods with my squats, but i do use chains and bands and they have made my legs big and my ass even bigger
    for maximum stimulation thus more growth (or strength) squats have been proven superior to leg presses through an emg study which was posted on tnation by bret contreras, if i recall the difference wasn't too big of a gap, but squats still beat leg presses
    yes i love my squats

    Leg press for sure..

    safety #1... it is also the #1 for endurance training

    Most of my clients are 45+.. so safety is #1 and 54 yr old female 145 leg pressing 600 lbs for reps is just cool to watch..

    example, can a person squat 1200 lbs?? but they can work up to that much in a leg press thus continued stress on the muscle + proper food and rest = size and strength...

    and yes even at 50 i can leg press 1200 for reps

    I also do 300lbs for 300 reps, i prefer this type of endurance training, as i don't need/want to buy bigger pants..

    I can squat ATG to failure but I will never get the same feeling in my legs as when I leg press to failure

    squats for me, its all the other muscles required to do the squat that trumps the leg press for me.

    Leg press 100%! Now while I agree squats are better overall a leg press puts you in a very stable enviornment letting you maximize the load applied to the quad. so for your question def leg press

    Why not do them both ? Super-sets squats and right after presses till failure. You'll kill them good.

    As with everything, its a combination of both. But squats for sure.

    Why can't you squat to failure? I squat to failure every set (minus warmup). By far my legs are in the most pain during squats. You can do forced reps with squats just as easily as with a leg press. If I was leg pressing I would need two spotters, with squats I only need one. All my clients squat.
