I would think that the only way he can do 3 hours is if he does some cardio. or does a full body workout for 1 day a week.

The only time I've ever spent 3 hours in a gym is when I played basketball for 3 straight hours. To lift for 3 straight hours? That's insane.

I'm in for 45min to an hour.

3hrs = Not doing a goddamn thing properly and talking to everyone instead of working.
You can honestly get in and get out in 45-1hr IMO (minus doing cardio).***No source checks!!!***

same here. I see people standing around the weights swapping the shit like if there at the park or something. I get in and get out. I only stop trainning to take breaks between sets or when I'm walking to the next station.

Then they wonder why I don't talk much to anyone there...hmm because I'm there to workout!
Sorry about that folks, I couldn't help myself anymore.

I don't mind if girls at the gym don't work out. As long as they are wearing tight clothes, showing off their tight bodies, and letting me take a peak in between sets, it's all good. As for the fatties, either they get their ass on the treadmill or go home, and they better be wearing baggy clothing.

Don't listen to any of these guys!!!!!!!
3 hours in the gym is INCREDIBLE !!!
One hour on Monday
One hour on Wednesday
One hour on Friday
Personally I go 5 days a week, but anything more than an hour is either Overtraining or not doing it right !!! this does not include cardio time

I do 40 minutes weight training, 20 minutes cardio after. I've been timing myself lately and my workouts have been so much better!

Whenever people ask me "how long do you workout for" and I say usually an hour or hour 1/4 per day they are SHOCKED, they expect me to say like 4 hours per day or something. If you are in the gym for 3 hours then one of a few things is wrong:
1. You are overtraining, plain and simple.
2. You are taking too much time between sets, not working hard enough.
3. You are there just to talk and shouldnt be in the gym because you pretend to be using a machine and dont let people who are actually there for a purpose use them.
Keep it intense and dont &*@$ around in the gym, go to a bar if you wanna chat.

Ultimately, these people who do extremely lengthy workouts are just asking to get into a catabolic state each time they are in the gym. Along with educating oneself about diet, supplements and the like...training principles should also be considered.

i usually spend at least 3 hours every time i go, 4 to 5 days a week.. now that summers right around the corner it will be for more. more lounging around the pool. getting in on pick up games of dodge ball, maybe some pilates classes....

The real reason is that after about 45 mins to an hour your test levels start to decrease and your cortisol sky rockets, If he dosent know, cortisol is a catabolic hormone, meaning you are tearing down to much muscle fiber and making it impossiable to recover your digging to big of a hole.
Have your friend read this post, HEY GUY THAT WORKS OUT FOR 3 HOURS, YOUR A TARD!!!!!

Actually, when I'm doing a westside program in between linear periodization training cycles, I'll be in the gym for at least 2hrs. I always bring food with me tho, so that's alright. It's hard to get all my equipment on very quickly and have my two training partners doing the same thing. But to the OP, 3 hrs is ridiculous.

if you are up for it.
challenge him for a 20week liftoff. (nothing to do with being an astronaut)
find a way to measure progress (measurements, weight, strength, ect.) and see who gains the most in the alloted time.
