I am listening to malmsteen right now....and Icarus has got to be the coolest F'ing song I have heard in several months. That and some songs off Friedman's first solo album.

^^^ ive been playing for over 20 years...Tell me how your hand feels after playing it note for note at r/t speed...... Then call Kirk Avg to good......
Oh and keep in mind ...he also came up with it ....

To be honest I find it's actually a lot easier to come up with it then it is to learn it all and try to remember it, if you are a creative musician. If you know your scales, improvisation is easier than learning a solo note for note.
So I would not want to try to play someone elses solo note for note as I prefer to be creative. BUT chops wise, it's just fast blues licks, Hammett might have skill but he is NOT versatile or very creative.
And Dave Mustaine wrote that song

PS metallica is the reason I picked up a guitar, and I spent the first 2 or 3 years just learning their songs. Hammett is better than an "Average" guitar player, if you include all the people who just play at home and upload shitty youtube videos. But he doesn't belong anywhere near a list of the top in the world. PS the solos on Death magnetic are garbage. He has no creativity it's just pentatonic wankery.

^^^ we are talking about the music not the song right? I agree with what u are saying re: composing vs compying ...and almost all his stuff is just "fast blues licks" ...either way ....its not for the avg to good guitarist and calling him that is selling him short IMO ...but hey everyone has their own opinions.....

^^ agreed.....
btw i personally find some of his work on accoustic remakes of metallica stuff more impressive than the original versions ....

Yeah for sure, I havn't heard a lot of remakes but it forces him out of his comfortable box and it's good, he can't just slam the same 3 notes really fast with a wah haha

^^^^^Not to beat a dead horse but u bring up a good point Bob Rock was very frustrated with him on the Black Album and said he had to "push him like hell" to try to get him out of that box.....so good points...and again - i think we agree for the most part....

Dimebag clearly is up there with the great. It's not just his playing ability I think that comes into it for me for being the best or greatest guitarist. I think it is the riffs and the sound they have, that makes them great. And to be honest Pantera and dimebag are the only band that I listen to over and over and over again without ever getting bored of them. They are my motivation music for the gym.
But in saying that their is loads that I like and think are great, AC/DC, Morbid Angels Trey(can't spell his surname), Slayers Kerry King, Obituary etc.

i think the black album was the end for me. it was a good album and all but i loved them back in the early eightys for ther first few albums and i prefer the longer less radio friendly metalica songs. but like chode logan metalica was what popped my musical cherry and got me into playing guitar.
