I really came into this conversation late, so I apologize if this has already been went over.
First, you have to understand the nature of government. It's first and primary role is to protect itself. Then it's secondary role is to protect it's citizenry. Once you understand this, you will also understand that a politician will see himself as more valuable than anyone else. In order to protect your role in the government from being overthrown in a coup, you need a strong military. The tricky part is to justify the size of the military to the people paying for it (taxpayers). But you cannnot admit to the taxpayers you want the military so you can protect yourself from them, the people paying for it. So instead, we need another reason. We create a boogey man, or an enemy. We have a huge military now, as we did back in the cold war days. Our numbers may be lower, but our budget is relatively just as high. How do we explain this? Wasn't the budget supposed to shrink post cold war? We even affectionately had a name for it, called the post "Cold War Dividend". So what happened to our dividends? Well my friends, government and it's spending doesn't shrink. So to justify a lack of cold war dividends, we created a new boogey man, and his name is "Extremist Muslim Terrorist". And in order to make him very real, then everytime something even remotely bad occurs that is even remotely attributable to "EMT", then we play it up huge in the media. We do this to create fear and panic. We fear EMT, and will pay anything to be "SAFE". And it's a good thing that Muslims wear turbins, because it makes tthem look different, and we all know how easy it is to vilify someone that looks different.

Ive sucked in enough CS to tell you its effect on ppl with no doubts.
Hell we used to break the capsules apart and dump the powder in guys beds for when they got out of the shower.
Mace and pepper spray/OC is nothing more than a deterent. Not from movies my friend. If I had any doubts about the usefullnes of this junk I would not make such comments.

The are not 5 sec prongs. They are capable of giving a shock for 20 seconds with each pull of the trigger unless the safety is maunualy turned on by the user.
They hurt but they don't. At least when it's over and you gather yourself you feel pretty good.
I reccommend the civialian version to a lot of ppl in my training classes. It;s just unfortunate that they cost between $600-$800

CS causes an involuntary rection in your body that causes the eyes to want to close and for your mucas membranes and tear ducts to flow heavily, also involuntary coughing can occur in higher doses.
Your telling me that if you truely intended to harm some one thats all it would take to deter you. Fighing through CS and OC pepper spray is basic training shit for most modern military. The effects of this really are limited to discomfort on a motivated assailant. Those that give up to to contact with these forms of non lethal force are generally compliant to begin with.
It all comes down to motivation! It works well in riot situations but again most of those ppl are not strong willed and motivated to begin with. I have seen ppl pepper sprayed and cs gased and it just REALLY pisses them off!

They get their VA money, if they can't get their shit together, fvck them. Being a soldier at one point in their life doesn't give them extra points in my book. They had a dangerous job and was compensated for it to the amount that their contracts promised them they would get paid. Anything they were "owed" by us the public was paid for to them in their paycheques, allowances and other benefits. If it wasn't enough, they shouldn't have agreed to the job. And before you call me unpatriotic or something, I did enlist in the army at one point in my life.

I wish all Americns could live outside the USA for atleast 1 year of their life to see the USA from the outside looking in vs. the inside looking out. Living out of the USA has really changed my perception in how I view my country.
