    Self Blood Letting....

    Hey brothers & Sisters,

I posted this in the Q & A and just tryin to get a lil more feedback... Thx

    Hey everyone,

So just as is says... I'm looking to start my own blood letting!

Reasons being(easier), and I've been turned down twice in two days(they say they can only tap into my Cephalic vein but only at elbow.... but from being in a long coma, and about 10 surgeries later they are very weak and collapsed on one side) but that same vein comes down your arm and when your palm is facing down it bulges not even 1/2"from elbow and where they want to tap into!

I've talked to a few therapeutic phlebotomists and they said 21g will definitely work, w/good volume still(note I want to try a 21g b/c of placement where I need to tap into and it'll be smaller)

So, I'm missing a line/suction for draining?? I plan on getting both an 18g and 20/21g's to see what works best... But how could I make a line or point me in the next step towards one??

Staff IDK if this is crossing the line, and will edit if need be! Thx and would appreciate any and all advice!

I stuck 4mm tubing in the luer lock end of the needle, Nach. 5/32" should work also. Taped it together with tape. The tubing fits pretty decent.

Nice AG! I knew someone Macguvered a line! . Thx for those sizes... I'm still gonna get a kit(w/a fitted line etc) that way it's just as easy as 123... Appreciate the line size!

You are by far braver than me. I have zero problem getting blood test frequently and the nurses LOVE my large veins because they are so easy but I just could not do it to myself.

Bass was the brains behind it. I just knew 4mm and 5/32" are fairly close to each other in size.

They draw blood from antecubital veins, not medial arteries...

Yeah after I looked into it further I did realize that. Thx Bonaparte for clarification! I've also read they pull it from the medial artery? For what it's worth I can't tap into that anyway thx again

The medial arteries are in your legs. And nobody does phlebotomy through an artery, since arterial lines/draws are relatively difficult and dangerous procedures.

Thx... I looked up medial artery and TBH I thought it was in our arms(for some reason I kept thinking of Brachial artery the whole time) weird I know...

And again I appreciate you taking the time to explain that! I've been reading up on sites to draw from and Im sure if wont be a problem... I'll let youse know when I get my supplies, etc... I've also talked to my Dr. And she will write a script which would help (but Id rather start doing it myself)

Lol... Luckily my crit is only 46 atm
But my platelets/Monocytes are constantly elevated(no spleen) and my RBC/and white T's always seem to get me a nice stay at the hispital anymore(if fighting something off - immune system compromised after splenectomy) so they said just to donate line it's no big thing(Sbd it ususlly isn't except lately they've been sticking to there guns on where to draw...

We'll see Gonna order the supplies as soon as I can...

Thx for heads up GGR, I'll give it a lil more time(maybe others will chime in, but the more I see the more easier it looks(but I will always have someone around me at all times when I do this) but yes, I do agree that he's got it down nicely.

Thx for idea(& I'm sure he'd be happy to help)!

Hey Bonaparte, thx again for clearing that up though it was pretty dumb on my part...

So I see that I'll be tapping into my Cephalic vein as its nice and thick(the branch that wraps clockwise around your forearm... Also my Basalic vein is also very nice(but seems to want to roll)...

I'd feel more comfortable w/the Cephalic vein... What's your take on this??

If you were to pass out while self bleeding could you bleed to death? Sounds like a stupid question and I would imagine you would pull the needle out but just curious.

B/c I don't have a spleen and my platelets and monocytes/and RBC become elevated anf the only way to rid it is through self blood letting... Or donation and I've been turned down twice already...

I'm sure you could bleed out if one passes out but that's why I would have someone their for the. First couple times.... I don't see myself passing out from this at all, but I've never done it by myself yet...

Great idea to have someone else there. I only ask because I remember years ago and the first time I pinned myself I nearly passed out. After pinning hundreds of times it is not an issue but I know I would prob. be nervous pinning a vein for the first time.

I told my pops and he's down! my ex fiancé was an Endo(PhD) and woulda been great(but she wasn't down w/the roids) lol

But why do they(centers) only want to draw from the Cephalic vein(the branch at elbow)?? I don't see it being a problem w/the same Cephalic vein 1/2" down or less??
