I need/want a handgun

I know some of your own/carry handguns. For personal reasons/reacreational shooting I have started looking at them. However, I know hardly nothing about them. I dont think I want a canon but what's everyones thoughts about different guns etc. I would like to pick up a used one and spent about $500-600. Any advice/pics would be great.

I have a few handguns, and my 9mm are my favs.
Ruger is a good name, good control. You can get one of them new for that range.

nah, i wouldnt buy used, unreliable, lots of stoppages.

the Browning HP can carry 13 9mm rounds, great wpn, very simple, durable & reliable.

A .45 round will definetly kill someone, but you will only be able to carry 7 rounds (Colt 1911). I personally, would rather have Hollow Point 9mm Rds.

not much stopping power with a 9mm military went to them from the .45 because bullets were cheaper. If you just looking for personal protection i would say maybe a used glock 357 model they have stopping power with higher grain bullets and if you just want to shoot around you can buy cheap .38 bullets and shoot out of the 357 and they work just fine for plinking with itTarget shooting wise best of both worlds for a beginner.

I disagree,

The popular myth that a 9mm does not have stopping power is a lie. Any round 9mm and up which hits in the centre of mass will knock down an aggressor. The military switched to 9mm because a combat pistol must be able to hold several rounds, as everytime you fire a pistol, you would be performing "double taps" (in the military atleast). The .45 is quite unnecessary and only is popular to the "bigger is better" stereotype people are trapped in.

id get a ruger p89. i have one and its a good cheap gun.. it isnt my fav, but its almost impossible to get the thing to jam up... my per fav is hnk usp 45... ah i love that ****in thing

Sig P220one of the most reliable and hassle free out of the box handguns out there in my oppinion. i own one and love it. buy the way, it is a .45, so no worries about wheather it has stopping power or not. new for $660 take a look:

id say that one of the best kinds of handguns you could buy would be a glock model 30, which is the subcompact .45 auto. they are easy to carry concealed, reliable, and very accurate. i've got nothing against 9mm handguns, but personally id rather have a .45 for self defense. lets say for example some guy strung out on pcp trys to attack you. he may or may not feel a 9mm round, but a .45 round would definately deter him. btw, the glocks chambered in .357 are .357 sig, not .357 mag. what that means is that the bullet is the same size, but the sig resmbles a rifles bullet.

I'm a Heckler & Koch fan, I wanted a Mark 23, but settled on the USP tactical .45. Great gun, ez to shoot and clean, I have had no problems with it.. HK also has the P2000(.357 SIG/9mm/.40 S&W) series, and a smaller version of my gun (USP) in 9mm/.40 or .357. HK can be expensive, but they are quality products.....

yeah 7.62x39, its great, ammo is cheap and easy to find, the scope isnt sighted in, and the pic doesnt show but i have the muzzle brake on it too for increased accuracy, its a bad mother even if you just want to shoot from the hip, i just ordered a hundred round drum for her and hopefully i can afford this carbon fiber version of the stock i have.....

some dumb ass senator went all out trying to ban sh_t like that, and all her hard work payed off. basically what makes a certain firearm illegal in cali is center fire ammo, clip fed with a pistol grip. its lame, we cant buy semi auto AKs, but its legal to buy ruger mini 30s, which is basically the same thing, except there isn't a pistol grip on it.

yea, it offends me too. il be stuck in cali for a few more years, but eventually il move to a state where i can buy myself an M4, an AK and a .45 caliber mac 11

to answer your other question, the browning comes in 9mm, .38 & .45

I carry a sig 45 at work...best gun out there, owned a few h&k's and para's but all had quality issues..Stick with a Sig, you cant go wrong.

the size of the calibre = a larger round. In video-game terms, a .45 will do more damage than a 9mm.

everytime you fire your handgun, you should be performing double taps (to the centre of mass, i.e. just slightly below the chest) , hence, the need for more a larger capacity magazine not a larger round ... though this is my personal opinion, it also is doctrine for all military's in the world
