Anybody remember a college basket ball player (I guess he was some kind of college star) named Len Bias?

Jump back to 1986; this "bright" young man was the second round pick of the Boston Celtics, a forward with what appeared to be a future in the sport.

On the second night after the draft, while celebrating, he died of cardiac arrhythmia (irregular beating of the heart) induced by a cocaine overdose.

So in his case, maybe the cocaine hadn't been "stepped on" at all or enough to weaken the shock. It was a bit difficult to imagine at the time, a young healthy athlete whose heart is going to have trouble; especially perplexing from a layman's point of view.

This death came on the heels of the kick-off of the aids epidemic, and his untimely demise gave rise to a joke concerning cocaine.

I was shooting pool & drinking beer at a bar that night (in Los Angeles, Boston’s rival). When the news came out everyone rejoiced and thought it was hilarious that Bias died. Free drinks that night! Bias was a beast and a certain future hall of fame player.

This choir boy, led the LAPD on a high speed chase, through residential areas, then resisted arrest... I think he got what he had coming to him. Endangering the lives of, not only the pursuing police officers, but also the public. Maybe they went a little bit too far, but that "tuning up" that he received, was the best thing that ever happened to him financially. Hell, I wish it would have been me; he got a major settlement from the city of LA. And then he died a few short years later, I believe that his body was full of drugs which were uncovered during the autopsy.

I also have to agree with Charger. The police should be held to a higher standard.

When / if a cop beats the shit out of a person for “no reason”, got it. But I give a pass or great latitude to cops on what their views of what a “reason” is or isn’t.

Personally, I think you run from a cop then you get shot. If they kill you, it’s on you, you decided to run.

You decide to lip off, you get smacked.
You don’t want to follow instructions, you get your ass kicked & they don’t have to “fight fair”.
You fight back, you get shot.

In the above posts I was speaking of 2 very specific situations. The fact that both “victims” were not white is neither here nor there for me. I’ve been in 3 situations that I could have been belligerent with cops, because I thought I had a “right” to be (non of them were traffic related). I was polite, followed instructions and by golly, all went very well. Their tension dropped, their tone changed and smiles all around.

My rules for following cops are from a different time. It’s getting close to dying time for me, thank God, because these newer generations feel they are too entitled and walk around like spoiled brats. Unfortunately, I think it was my generation, the f’n hippies, that might have started with this with their anti-Vietnam garbage.

Athletes wore t-shirts with that phrase out of protest. I correctly stated that if he could in fact say those words, then he was in fact breathing, which makes the movement of “I cant’t breath” a bit of a joke.

a cop is not a god or a judge and jury of 6.. thats the only way you should die of a "crime" is because you got sentenced and a jury of 6 of your brothers agreed your guilty of the crime and worthy of death.
a badge gives you no power to decide that for yourself at all.
