A great classic novel which is not only enjoyable and laden with irony but quite short is Voltaire's "Candide". I think more people should read it.

i read a novel this weekend that was pretty much based on the idea that when you die... you go to a purgatory... but you only exist as long as ppl on earth remember you... when the memories of you start to fade and ppl pass on.... your purgatory gets smaler and smaller until you finally dissapear. it was pretty interesting

I believe deep inside everyone is born to pursue a big goal. But just some few people realise that the world can be conquered, and even fewer have the balls to try it. Modern day society, monotheism, etc etc tells us to say ok to everything. Have no ambitions (other than economic).
