I have yet to try front squats with the free weights, but I do alternate with the squat machine at my gym. Some weeks I'll hit it with my back to the pad and others I face the pad.

Honestly I hate front squats. But it's hard to find an exercise that can really compare to what it does. I have long forearms and poor wrist flexibility so I use some bands as handles. Back in the day I did cross grip. I want to make some solid rope handles or straps cause I missed my last two reps when it stated to come off the shoulder. It's funny cause a decade ago I did front squats because I didn't have a rack or any equipment, at the time I did them once a week and always hated but my quads felt awesome after, give it a try.
